Authorities increase road safety efforts as millions head home for the holiday.

BANGKOK: -- AS MANY holidaymakers started their journeys to hometowns along congested highways across the country yesterday, Interior Minister Anupong Paochinda presided over the launch of a road-safety centre in Bangkok that aims to solve traffic problems and prevent road fatalities during the New Year holiday period.

Anupong instructed the centre, operating under the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, to intensify operations in collaboration with related agencies, the general public and the private sector under the government’s Pracharat, or “state of the people”, model that aims to reduce factors contributing to road accidents from yesterday to Wednesday.

He urged local administrative organisations to repair roadways that are known to be accident-prone. Officials were also told to ensure public transport buses and vans were safe.

Yeap! That's the solution all right.

Get out there and do roadworks during the time when the most vehicles will be on the roads !!!

Rather a tight schedule for roadworks!

They have been given an incentive to drive like maniacs and have a total disregard of laws, fines have been reduced for the new year period.

Maybe double or triple the fines and confiscate the vehicle if the driver refuses to pay

Fines of 400 baht to someone making 350 bt/day, is a lot.

Same as a fine of $ 200/day for western person.

Wrong comment.

Silly me, I assumed the fines were going to be paid into the government account not the piggy's  bank

A patchwork solution forget the other 350 some odd days of the year.

I've seen the bib sitting under tents along the roads...yes they were are all on inactive posts, playing with laptops nonstop.

They even didn't give me a bag of rice, far too busy playing candycrush.

Officials were also told to ensure public transport buses and vans were safe.  More rhetorical bs from yet another Minister !! All the focus is in on the deadly 7 days... unfortunately, the remaining 358 days are just as dangerous...
