Man held over 'threat' to New Year's Eve in Sydney

A man has been arrested in Sydney, Australia, for allegedly making an online threat to the city’s New Year Festivities.

The 40-year-old was detained at the airport after getting off a flight from London. Police say he has been charged under laws relating to suicide or encouraging suicide, rather than anti-terrorism laws.

Police believe the detained man was acting alone and had “no links to any cultural groups”.

Security is tight for Saturday night.

“Certainly from our perspective, we will be using a number of strategies, from not just in the city but from further out and not just police. It is about a whole government approach to ensuring the highest level of safety for the public,” said Mick Fuller, Assistant Commissioner of New South Wales Police.

The challenge of policing Sydney harbour follows police raids in another Australian city, Melbourne, a week ago, which authorities say foiled an ISIL-inspired plot to attack prominent sites there at Christmas.

Sydney’s massive fireworks display is being readied for one of the world’s biggest New Year celebrations and one of the most iconic, with up to 1.5 million revellers set to hit the streets to welcome in 2017.

Australia, a staunch U.S. ally which sent troops to fight in Afghanistan and Iraq, has been on heightened alert for attacks by home-grown radicals since 2014.

No links to any cultural group, but planning suicide as a weapon. Interesting as there are not many cultural groups that are happy to die themselves to cause death to their perceived enemies(Japanese kamikaze pilots in WW2 an exception to that).

Incorrect & misleading info as usual from you. The guy is a white Irish man.  Damien James O'Neil, who posted a threat message via social media, noticed by the general public, reported to police and was arrested upon landing at Sydney airport.. No info on suicide bomb, links to Islamic terror, blah, blah...

Lets wait until the dust has settled and more info is available before saying whether this was or was not an Islamist threat. There have been many caucasian converts to islam doing terror, your jumping to conclusions just because you have seen the guys name is highly prejudiced.

Talk about jumping to conclusions.    You pretty much see a Muslim behind every bad thing that happens.

How about you waiting for information rather than constantly making false assumptions in your never ending attempts of vilification and outright bigotry

May be clear to apologists like yourself.

Most of us want to wait for more information.

And jaidam is correct, you, simple1, was the first to bring up islam.

BS. The two of you are attempting to cover up your true selves which has been articulated in many posts. Numerous posts removed and suspensions issued against the member you're trying to defend for his bigoted commentary.

As a Mod recently commented in a topic, his agenda is very transparent, even though trying to veil his true motives.

Why do you assume he is Irish? Is this some subtle implication to denigrate known Irish bomber groups?

" Sydney man Damien James O'Neil, 40, is charged with sending the threatening document ........"

" The Chippendale man was arrested by counter-terrorism police ..........."

Nope, first media reports were quoting him as an Irish national. Apparently now police believe he has some mental health issues.

Well, they are, aren't they ????????
Generally, anything that pertains to suicide and threats to other people safety, is a muso these days !!

I would say that in some circles that is the perception, it certainly makes the news. I can't speak for the Aussies as haven't reviewed their numbers, but in America at least when you look at the numbers the perception doesn't fit the reality. I would imagine its similar in other places but the actual results may vary. Every time I look at the numbers though it's usually a minority number of actual incidents which tend to receive a lot more press than other incidents.

So what did you mean by the very first response in this topic?

It was only after Simple1 pointed out the person's name that you started to back peddle and talking about waiting for more facts!

Sydney Is not the capital of Australia, that's Canberra.

Sydney, with a harbor rivalled only by Rio, Is the capital of New South Wales, an Australian state, and theplace first settled by the Britush In 1788.

Australia Is comprised of 6 states and two territories, each with Its own capital, with Canberra being the capital of the Australian Capital Territory, and also the national capital, the seat of the Federal government.

Canberra  is the most boring place on earth not to mention it is colder than Alaska in the winter and hotter than hell in the summer, little wonder the pm has a second "official" house in Sydney.
