Kabila agrees to go, DRC to get elections by 2018

The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s political parties appear to have agreed on a formula allowing President Joseph Kabila to step down after elections held before the end of 2017. He has been in power since 2001, after his father was assassinated.

It is hoped the deal, mediated by the Catholic church, will end a dangerous political impasse that has seen violence in recent weeks as Kabila sought to extend his mandate, which expired on December 19, by changing the constitution. Security forces killed some 40 people last week after anti-Kabila demonstrations.

He will have to appoint a prime minister from the main opposition bloc for the transition period, decided on because the government says is not ready to hold an election yet.
