Pattaya - Hua Hin ferry Royal 1 on Saturday at Pattaya’s Bali Hai pier

PATTAYA — More than 100 tourists were left stranded Sunday morning at a Pattaya pier when the maiden voyage of a ferry service to Hua Hin was called off due to big waves.

The tourists had already registered for what was to be a free opportunity to take the 100-minute trip on the Royal 1 ferry, but it was canceled at the last minute on its first day of the operation.

This pretty much sums up the future of this service. Any guesses on how many weeks/months until final cancellation?

I wonder whether they will cancel so readily, once people have paid and they would have pay refunds?

is it a boat?

or is it a tub?

I wonder what would happened should high waves developed within an hour after sailing out...

An old saying springs to mind "damned if you do and damned if you don't ". seems like they haven't employed a mini van driver after all.

I guess afteraffects of the cyclone that went across from Philippines

then they will blame the gulf for not being greng jai (ie. not understanding thainess)! bad. sea! bad. sea!

Well that went well. Pretty much sums up the forward planning ideology of Thailand. Same thinking is the root cause of most problems here in the LOS.

average IQ's would suffice.

but that is not going to happen either.

Seems that while planning the ferry route the planners failed to take into account that large body of water may develop waves.  Or planners never heard heard of wind.

To be fair, the winds and waves are higher than normal. Gale force in places.

Seems submarine would have made more sense then. Maybe next time!

Didn't they anticipate there might be big waves in the ocean? First impressions last, what an appalling first day for the new ferry company.

This is very typical in Thailand.  Jumping into a project without giving it a thorough SWAT analysis.  Typically it is the monsoon season this time of the year (Dec to Feb) in the Gulf of Thailand.  You can only provide this service for 9 months of a year.  To kick off this project at this time, tells you how much planning has gone into it - doomed even before you start.

so you are happy that many Thais who have only few days off per year got their long awaited holiday spoiled (as some English newspapers that can not be referred to on this board reported today)? And who could never ever afford such an overpriced regular ticket? Wow, what a low-life creature you are....

Thais no holidays !!!! they barely do a full week ever!

someones overdosed  on the seasick tablets

Probably a good idea not to do the maiden run on high seas.

My typo mistake (O for Opportunity), thanks for the correction.

Waves of 4 metre height = 2 m in amplitude - which is nothing in the tropics.

If this ship can't handle such conditions, perhaps it will be better suited along the Bangkok river or canals.

Although I have to admit that the ferry is performing better than the aircraft carrier, which has not weighed anchor for years.

Nah, they're damned for not choosing/designing a ferry boat that can handle the conditions the ferry is going to face.

I don't know if any of the critics are    in Hua Hin, but the water is choppy and it is very windy. The red flag is flying for the beaches too.

Wrong.....Dec-Feb is the Northeast Monsoon; April-September the southwest monsoon; with transitions in the months in between.  Southwest monsoon frequently has monsoonal squalls and even bigger waves"

Wrong?  Please check you weather map and facts before disputing.  Yes, it is the Northeast Monsoon, that is why we have floods in southern Thailand (facing the south china sea) and the east coast of peninsula Malaysia now.  May-Oct, the Southwest Monsoon and we have the wet season in Phuket (Andaman seas).
