Tour Guide loses 20,000 Baht in cash and a 1 Million Baht Emulate in drive-by robbery.

Khun Tanawan aged 34 is a Tour Guide from Bangkok who leads groups of Chinese Tourists to Pattaya on a regular basis. He found himself making a Police report at Pattaya Police Station on Friday Night after he had become the victim of a bag snatch in South Pattaya, opposite the Shell Petrol Station.

He explained to Police Lieutenant Colonel Sirichai, the Investigating Officer, that he had taken a group of Chinese Tourists to a restaurant opposite the Petrol Station. He then left the group and went out to the street to summon a Baht Bus to take him to the Eastern Grand Hotel in Soi Kow Thai Low. As he was waiting for a Baht Bus, a motorbike drove passed the man and the passenger on the bike drove close to him and snatched a bag containing 20,000 Baht in cash, an ATM Card and a Buddhist Emulate worth 1 Million Baht. :o

At the station, he was able to give a full description of the two assailants and the motorbike and Police are now hunting for the two men who, as yet, remain at large.

Maybe it's just me, but this smells fishy. Who carries an amulet worth an estimated 1 million baht in a bag ? Especially while on the job ? Plus 20,000 cash and an ATM card ?

He doesn't have a wallet, or even pockets ?

Do tour guides normally drop their clients off at a restaurant and then take off to a hotel for some reason ?

And despite the fact it was a "drive-by" snatch, he was able to give full descriptions of the two people and their moto ?

(Yes officer, I can describe them both. Thai men, aged between 16-30, medium build (for Thais), black hair (hidden by moto helmets), riding a Honda Wave).

This guy is either incredibly stupid, or incredibly unlucky.

My guess, the amulet: he wanted to safeguard it by not wearing in on display around his neck; the cash: no brainer considering his line of work; the ATM card: how unusual for someone to carry such a thing in public.

Many people, Thai's included carry a 'purse', not at all unusual.

Not so far fetched considering he is in the tourist business and hotels cater to them.

Why is being observant a suspicious activity?

Neither stupid or unlucky, just another victim. I can not help but wonder how these thieves are able to fence their booty so easily. Seems to me a crackdown on the pawnshops for accepting 'dubious' goods would make this type of crime a little less profitable and appealing and give the BIB another angle in attempting to curb these a$$holes.
