Hillary Clinton for NYC mayor? Probably not, but rumours persist

By Joseph Ax

NEW YORK (Reuters) - In the weeks since Hillary Clinton's shock election defeat to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, a rumour has taken hold among New York City's political chattering class: could she challenge Mayor Bill de Blasio's reelection bid this year?

Discussion of a possible Clinton campaign intensified last week when conservative news website Newsmax reported that Democrats unhappy with de Blasio were pressing her to run. Stories soon appeared in various outlets, including the New York Times and the New York Daily News.

Still, the chances seem remote. Although the mayor of the largest U.S. city is often seen as a national figure, it could be seen as a step down for Clinton, 69, a former U.S. secretary of state who came tantalisingly close to winning the White House two months ago.

She needs to retire from politics. This recent election defeat should have been enough of a message. The Clinton dynasty is over, and that is a good thing. She was so tone deaf, and such a horribly poor candidate, she deserved to lose. And now she wants back? Give me and the American people a break. Go off into the sunset, and enjoy your multi billion dollar, ill gotten foundation money.

The rumor has legs.

A Siena College poll in late May 2016 found de Blasio's personal approval rating at just 44% in New York City while 50% view him unfavorably. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/cuomo-higher-approval-rating-de-blasio-poll-shows-article-1.2698822

Clinton enjoyed high approval ratings for her job as Senator within New York, reaching an all-time high of 72 to 74% approval rating. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Senate_career_of_Hillary_Clinton

Former Mayor Bloomberg backed Hillary for mayor. But she's not a resident of NYC as required by state law - she would have to become a resident (studio apartment?) by election day.

Practically though, I don't think Hillary would be interested.

It might be less but it will not be chump change. I would accept payment for a 1 hour rant on how good a job I have done in life. The Clinton brand still has some value and she must make hay while the sun shines. People like her are like orchestra leaders they never want to lay down the baton.

de Blasio and HRC have a history, he was her campaign manager at one point.  I doubt she would run against him, it would split the NYC Democrats and they would both lose.

It takes a certain amount of, er, charisma to be an effective mayor of NYC.  I grew up there, the first mayor I recall was Robert Wagner, supposedly the last of the Tammany Hall mayors, and he was more clout than charisma.  Hillary just doesn't have the presence.

Anthony Weiner would have made a great NYC mayor, but better his shortcomings were revealed sooner rather than later.

"The biggest mouth in the room these days, Donald J. Trump, who for the most part can’t seem to keep that mouth shut, makes significantly more for a speech than Clinton."

"President of the Learning Annex, Bill Zinker, said that Trump is by far the best speaker with the largest draw. Zinker, pays Trump anywhere from $1 million to $1.5 million dollars an appearance, adding that Trump attracts massive audiences."

"Trump received $1.5 million for each of the eighteen speeches he gave between 2006 and 2007."

peddling influence in the Government
