This constant story about Thailand wanting a better class of tourist does get old does it not, perhaps the ladyboys and gold chain snatchers on Beach Road are complaining about poor takings! Why not just weed them out at the airport and if they don't appear well heeled, send them straight home again, how dare the peasants come to upmarket Thailand, what nerve. Why, they could even have separate queue lanes at Immigration in Swampy, "Well Heeled", "Loafers and Slip-Ons" and "Sandals", problem solved.

but that requires training of immigration officers to detect Gucci loafers priced between 600 and 800 €URos a pair

Old europeans demand flat floors without holes or other obstacles.  Also they want to be able to speak good english to others. They are not used to look around them all the time for any dangers.

If Thailand can build nice resorts with flat floors, loads of parks and benches, animals/wildlife, nurses, maids and the European can own a property there they might get interested. They will stay in the resort all day since it's too dangerous/filthy/hectic outside of it.

Your right. The pavements/sidewalks are atrocious everywhere in this country. Maybe that's why these tourists hardly ever venture far from their coaches to spend money.

For the 21 years I've been here the TAT has been saying the same thing. Perhaps their efforts are hampered by the fact that there is nothing here to attract more upscale tourists. I can't think of any reason why people with lots of money would want to come here unless they want to go to some of the most exclusive seaside resorts. Of course, there are many of those much closer to where many of these people live so depending upon that may not be fruitful. Also the TAT may want to look at some of the reasons that upscale people may want to avoid Thailand. For example, in the most upscale part of Bangkok, lower Sukhumvit Road which is home to many five-star hotels and high-end shopping centers, you can walk by many sidewalk vendors (yes, there are still many here contrary to published reports) who sell dildos, -- strapons, even -- vibrators and other assorted sex toys as well as Viagra and Ciallis and other sexual potency drugs. I'm sure that this is what attracts people in this socio-economic group when they are considering where to vacation. The broken sidewalks and general lack of cleanliness on said walkways is also undoubtedly a big draw. When the nitwits at the TAT eventually figure out that no amount of marketing -- if they even knew how to do it in the first place -- will attract people to substandard locations then possibly something will be done to rectify the situation. However, after all this time it hardly seems likely  that they will wake up any time soon.

At newyearsnight i walked from Central Chidlom to Gaysorn for shopping over the sidewalk. Suddenly we had to walk over loose gravel which was put there to cover the holes :cheesy:

Good thing was i didn't wear my Guzzi loafers that day.

I believe the locals are providing sufficient fertilizer on their own, together with food scrap, gravy, blood and brain matter...

What they need is to be paid to clean those toilets, including wash basins and walls...

A conformity of footwear law will be passed requiring all visitors to the Kingdom to wear designated footwear in keeping with their financial standing, signs will be displayed prominently and there will be no exceptions.

The saying goes - you get what you deserve. In regards to Thailand I think the country is getting the tourist it deserves, untill the country cant sortout corruption, the rule of law, road safety, crime, road user madness, total disregard for the enviroment and self centred attitude, I cant see a movement in the quality of the tourist. As this is impossible to change within a generation nothing will change before we die.

Welcome News by all muggers as well as for the High end Thai Resorts/Hotels owners  .Again for the Elites only. What is wrong with the rest of the poor tourists coming on low budget? I am sure they amount to a decent sum at the end of year. They also keep certain low cost guest houses n budget hotel open.

F that mentality of being selective in this particular industry.

Great idea to improve the 'quality' of the tourist, but for this to happen, you need to improve the quality of the destination. Improve the roads. Improve the behaviours of road users. Do something about taxi drivers ripping off passengers. Do something about violent Thai young men. Do something about lady boy bashing and robbing tourists. Do something about dual pricing. Do something about Thai people leaving rubbish everywhere thats a tourist destination. Do something about the Soi dogs roaming everywhere. Do something about the ugly dirty street vendors. Oh, wait. There's way too much doing when all Thai authorities seem capable of is Talk. Pathetic.

Why don't they concentrate on attracting European pensioners who have to have a minimum spend of 65K to qualify for a long term 'visa'? Enable home ownership.  Each pensioner has 'well-heeled' family/friends who will visit numerous times if the pensioner has a house/spouse to make it a comfortable holiday without numerous form filling.

We contribute to Thailand's Education by teaching or paying for wife's extended family through University.

The more welcome we are made to feel; the more pensioners will come.

I wonder if anybody in government ever did the sums.

Many pensioners and expats all bringing in an average of 50,000 baht a month.

Let us say 500,000 times 50,000 times 12 is a huge amount of money.

Plus of course the investment and spending on houses, condos, cars, motorbikes.....

Guess that in the long run is more profitable for Thailand as investing in tourists.

Thailan hab klab, go you Kao Yai hab eulop village.

What amazes me the most is the NOWHERE in Thailand they understand the fact that it's much more comfortable to walk in shade under nice tree's...not all the same tree's but nice different ones and the older the better.

Tree's with nice flowers/smell or fruit are the best.  Also streetvendors can be great but not too many of them and they have to show the price plus a clean stall. (also no annoying children or filthy pavement around them).

I stayed in a topmarket condo in Hua Hin but when i walked out of it the sidewalks were totally blocked by chairs/table where locals could eat streetfood...i had to walk over the road to pass them. And those condo's were all for sale and sure not cheap. TIT.

In times of need, many Christians seek solace in The Bible. Maybe, TAT should do the same ???

Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

Galatians VI  (King James Version)

“And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.”

John 21:6 (King James Version)

Rich chinese love to go to Europe, where there are nice cities to explore without a scammer on every corner of the street.

When will we get nice smokingrooms on Swampy airport Thailand? Or do quality tourists have to go in that dirty doghouse for a smoke?

Ever been in Rome or Paris. A lot of african scammers and pickpockets everywhere. Last time I went to germany to show my thai GF my home country she has been sexually harassed by dozens of arab teens while shopping. Thank you I feel happier in Bangkok.

Could be sound thinking but not necessarily for the reasons TAT thinks. Elite Chinese know they have a sphere of influence and expect to be wined and dined for leading the way to a destination. TAT no doubt thinks of revenues from these hi-so Chinese, but they should be thinking of comping them in exchange for photo ops and testimonials. Then conduct an aggressive, Chinese language, media campaign.
