BANGKOK: -- The family of a Japanese backpacker missing for three weeks are increasingly worried about him.

Both his girlfriend and other family members are starting to think that something terrible may have happened to Sonam Tsuboi, aged 21, reports Kapook.

He was last seen on Khao San Road on December 27th last year. He was due to meet his Japanese girlfriend on January 7th but in a conversation on December 27th he tried to put her off coming to Thailand from Japan.

Apparently he was crying and his voice was frail, his elder brother reported to kapook.com.

When the girlfriend said she was coming anyway Tsuboi relented and they arranged to meet at the airport. But when she arrived he was not there and no one has seen him.

Now the plight of the family is gaining more coverage and was featured on Thai TV Channel 3. The girlfriend and several family members are in the kingdom searching for him.

Tsuboi is described as slim and 165 centimeters tall. He has a distinctive and large tattoo on his left foot.

Immigration have said earlier that there is no evidence that he has left Thailand.

Met a Thai girl and is shacking up with her?

I hope you're right but I suspect something more sinister.
