snoop1130
Corruption index hits six-year high By The Nation Thailand’s Corruption Situation Index (CSI) last month reached its highest point in six years, while corruption has caused an average loss of 0.8 per cent of gross domestic product since military rule was established, according to the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce’s Centre for Economic and Business Forecasting. Thanawat Polvichai, the centre’s director, said December’s CSI reached 55, the highest in six years, reflecting a moderate level of corruption. The UTCC claims signs of corruption began to ease in the latter half of 2014 after the military seized power in a coup and set up a junta-controlled government. Since then, annual losses attributed to corruption have averaged Bt120 billion or 0.8 per cent of GDP, he said. brucec64
http://www.transparency.org/cpi2015#results-table This article is a gross misrepresentation of the facts. Not sure if The Nation is purposely misleading or is just unable to do rudimentary analysis of facts. The 76 ranking is for 2015, and most of the data collected was in 2014. From the site FAQ "The sources of information used for the CPI 2015 are based on data gathered in the past 24 months. " This number does not reflect junta reduction in corruption. It actually reflects a reduction under Yingluck... The 2016 ranking will be out next week and that is the important one because it fully reflects a period that the junta was in power. http://www.transparency.org/news/pressrelease/media_advisory_corruption_perceptions_index_to_be_launched_on_25_january_20
spidermike007
Of course. This administration is probably doing less to fight corruption, than five of the past administrations combined. Despite the protestations to the contrary. When is the last time you heard about a top official, minister, high ranking policeman, or member of the Army brass brought up on charges, and convicted, and sentenced? It just does not happen. How about a CEO of one of the companies that traffic in slaves, or abuse their workers? It just does not happen here. They are all above the law. Way, way above the law. Any and all laws. Moving Thailand backwards. At an alarming pace. Edited January 19, 2017 by spidermike007

waldroj
Obviously, corruption of the truth does not count in these UTCC figures !!! Had Mark Twain been reporting this, he probably would have said something like, "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story".

Brer Fox
The corruption claims with the bribery by Rolls-Royce and Thai Airways should blow this statistic out of the water. The bribery factor in Thailand is NOT a diminishing number. The sky is the limit, particularly when it comes within the military, the RTP and civil servants. Seligne2
Very poorly written article. The title, "Corruption Index Hits Six Year High" led me to believe that corruption was on the increase (that comports favourably with my own impression). However, the point of the article is that corruption is on the wane.

Mook23
Thailand with no corruption collapses instantly. Chaos will put an end to all activity from bottom to top. Corruption is part of all levels of life here. Same in burma. Laos. Cambodia. Etc. Corruption gets things done here. People couldnt be bothered to do things by the books. It's a way of life. Tea money. Bottle of black label. Some smuggled forest meat from Bpama. Brown envelope. Thailand was built on that. On all levels including army. Sorry PM. "The UTCC claims signs of corruption began to ease in the latter half of 2014 after the military seized power in a coup and set up a junta-controlled government. Since then, annual losses attributed to corruption have averaged Bt120 billion or 0.8 per cent of GDP, he said. Earlier, annual losses due to graft were about Bt300 billion to Bt400 billion, or 2.5 per cent of GDP, the centre claims. " Its actually lower based on the content, the title is misleading. Their "corruption index hits six-year high" meaning the lower the number, the less corrupt. The nation has always wrote favorably of the junta, no reason for them to be on their bad side too. smedly
perhaps all you geniuses would to share the details of how they work out this corruption figure considering "corruption" is something that is well hidden unless someone is caught in the act, now if this figure represents corruption that has been exposed then who is responsible for exposing it and surely the higher the better, put it this way, if they announced tomorrow that there was no corruption in Thailand would you believe them lol
webfact
Thailand’s corruption situation sees best improvement in 6 years BANGKOK, 20th January 2017 (NNT) – Thailand enjoyed its best outcome in six years in 2016 when the country’s corruption ranking made a significant improvement. Director of the Center for Economic and Business Forecasting at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, Thanavath Phonvichai said on Thursday that the latest survey of civil servants, business people and members of the public, undertaken in December found the country’s corruption index at 55, compared with 53 in June. Mr. Thanavath said that the change is the best in six years for Thailand. He added that the survey found the financial damage borne by the government as a result of corruption stood at between 60 billion baht and 120 billion baht and this amount has affected Thailand’ economic growth rate by 0.42 % to 1.27%. Mr. Thanavath went on to say that respondents called for more stringent punishments for those found guilty of corruption and for more government support for networks, business groups and individuals in their fight against corruption. -- nnt 2017-01-
webfact
Thailand makes improvement in fighting corruption with scores rising to 55 BANGKOK: -- Although public sector corruption is still rife with an estimated 120 billion baht in bribes being paid last year, but Thailand has shown a satisfactory improvement with a significant increase in scores in six years.
