Thai Chinese people in Bangkok to spend over 6.4 billion baht to celebrate Chinese New Year

The upcoming Chinese New Year next week will see Thais of Chinese descent in Bangkok spending over six billion baht in celebrations of their traditional festival and holiday.

SHANGHAI/BEIJING (Reuters) - With 6 million Chinese tourists expected to travel abroad over the Lunar New Year break, China's Jan. 27 to Feb. 2 holiday is crucial for Taiwan tour agency operator Li Chi-yueh, who relies on mainland visitors for a third of his revenue.

Myanmar's remote Wa State suffers as fewer Chinese come to party

PANGSAN, Myanmar (Reuters) - In a remote casino in northeastern Myanmar, China's pervasive campaign against graft has taken its toll. Hundreds of local traders and farmers place petty bets as low as 10 cents, outnumbering a few Chinese who were once the VIPs of a gambling hall decorated with chandeliers and Renaissance-style paintings.

Powerful quake strikes off Papua New Guinea, initial tsunami alert wound back

SYDNEY (Reuters) - An 8.0 magnitude earthquake struck off Papua New Guinea on Sunday, triggering a tsunami alert for several Pacific islands though that was subsequently wound back to cover just PNG and neighbouring Solomon Islands.

At least 36 killed as Indian train derails

BHUBANESWAR, India (Reuters) - At least 36 people were killed and 50 injured on Saturday night when nine coaches of a passenger train derailed in eastern India, in the latest disaster to hit the vast and accident-prone state railways, police said.
