Education experts call for end to ‘disparity’ in schools system

By KANITTHA THEPJORN
THE SUNDAY NATION

EDUCATION campaigners say the current state education policies have failed to develop human resources for the nation and only focus on using the sector to serve political purposes.

Many education experts debated the topic “Education Welfare in the Constitution” at Thammasart University yesterday and stressed that education was a basic right that everyone should have access to equally while urging people to campaign for their own right to education.

Education rights activist Thanapong Muensaen said the authorities’ understanding of education still focused on using the education system to serve their political ideology, which was to ensure state stability.

They speak the truth:

"Education rights activist Thanapong Muensaen said the authorities’ understanding of education still focused on using the education system to serve their political ideology,"

“The disparity in the education system also bars the poor from getting a proper education to improve their life quality, because of the lack of support from the government, which in the end will widen the social class disparity.”

Thailand 2117:

"The leader of the 37th military coup in Thailand wants to make sure Thai people learn how to read. It is important for using Facebook."

Education equality? here? never happen in a million years.....

Absolutely no will to change by anyone with the power to try & change it....

Seems someone has worked out the the Thai school system is just another arm of the military propaganda machine. Basic education takes second place.

The education administration system is also a corruption hub which needs fixing.

It will never happen as long as the Thai Chinese control the purse and other political strings.

The system is designed to keep "others" at a lower caste and reminded of such on a daily basis at the govt. schools.

There may well be disparity in the school system in Thailand, but (I believe) it goes far deeper than that.

I have to agree with Thanapong that, "...authorities’ understanding of education focused on using the system to serve their political ideology, and ensure state stability...".

For example, look at the pre-school kids here - they seem to display a similar excitement and wonder of the world around them that kids do everywhere.

But, (it seems to me that) once they enter the local education system, their outward-looking quest for learning is progressively siphoned off, to be replaced by the mind-numbing and inward-looking herd mentality that they take into their adult lives (which maintains the status quo, but hardly prepares them to compete in a globalized world). And, this seems to be so regardless of the "quality" or cost of their local education.

Evidence of this is to be seen in Section 54 of the so-called "people's" Constitution, viz:

Education of all forms shall aim at developing learners to become good people, well-disciplined, proud of the nation, capable with own skills, and responsible for family, community, society and the country.

Of course, there will always be some who question this and leave the country to see the real world (which must be an epiphany for them).

Why would they change a system that works perfectly for the ruling class and matches the disparity they have worked 'so hard to maintain amongst the Thai population.

..Self-appointed educational experts that have not been in the classrooms in years, most significantly, have forgotten the color of brown rice.

It's plain simple:

U must like kalabow.

U must worship xxxxxxxxxx.

U must wear that coloured polo.

U must stop walking at 6pm.

Thai society is very rigid and uniform. As pointed out, herd behaviour is encouraged. Individual critical thinking is frowned upon. It's considered antisocial, ie. ANTI-THAI. Aka Bplaek.

Nevertheless i love the people i bonded with. They have a lot of potential which is systematically suppressed. But at least they are not aware of it themselves....

The absolute last thing the amart want is an educated populace; just look what happened when a few smarty-pants got all uppity in 1932.

For many it looks like incompetence but I think some recognize that it is truly a concerted effort to keep the masses dumbed down.

The "despair" in the education system will remain forever.
