PHITSANULOK: -- Officials at Phu Hin Rongkhla National Park has imposed a new order on Phu Lomlo mountain in Phitsanulok province to prevent the expansion of resorts or homestays in a way which will threaten the wild Himalayan cherry (prunus cerasoides) trees.

There are over 100,000 wild Himalayan cherry trees or the Thai Sakura trees within 1,200 rai area on Phu Lomlo. The area has become a popular tourist destination for mostly Thai tourists who flock to the mountain retreat every January to admire the beauty of the wild cherry blossom. About 260,000 people visited the area in 2015 and the number soared to 300,000 the following year.

To preserve the area, no houses, resorts of homestays are allowed near the area, said Mr Suwan Panunampa, head of Phu Hin Rongkhla national park.

However, he said that local residents of Ban Mai Rongkhla are allowed to build resorts or homestays in area set aside by park officials to prevent a repeat of the Phu Tabberk lesson when the cool mountain retreat, also in Phitsanulok, was choked with resorts and homestays – most of which were illegally built.
