Teen arrested for using fake money

Featured Replies

A 19-year-old farmer faces up to 10 years behind bars for using a single counterfeit $20 bill during the Chinese New Year weekend in Kampong Speu province’s Chbar Mon district. District penal police officer Keo Sarith said that You Leak was arrested on Sunday after attempting to buy a case of beer and a box of cigarettes from a grocery store in Rokar Thom commune.

The provincial court charged Mr. Leak with “circulating counterfeit currency and banknotes” under article 647 of the Criminal Code, which is punishable by five to 10 years in jail if found guilty. “He was arrested after he used the fake money to pay for the items,” Mr. Sarith told Khmer Times.

Police also confiscated $140 worth of counterfeit US dollars from the teen. According to the US Federal Reserve’s Secret Service Bureau of Engraving and Printing media briefing last May, there was approximately $80 million in fake US currency in circulation around the world, with some of it in Cambodia.
