likethemthin
Looking to buy alcohol distilling equipment for home legal rum making. Some members of Thai Visa in some old posts ave had experience distilling alcohol from mainly corn or cane sugar. I need to locate a source of stainless steel or copper distilling equipment, particularly the big tank and “worm” apparatus, for a legal but small distilling operation. If anyone has any leads on where this kind of equipment can be purchased (from Thailand, Laos, Vietnam), your answer much appreciated. I don’t want to even try to import from US or UK. likethemthin
Guys, my post specifically mentioned Legal. We have a Thai lawyer to get all permits and product is for export only. But at least nice to be read!! But as there are few "home brewers" here in Thailand compared to other countries, trying to land a Thai equipment supplier for this kind of equipment has not been successful. Cheers!! rak sa_ngop
Some of the cheap dark Indian rums can be very tasty. But not keen on Filipino ones, although not tried too many. Good luck with your legal venture. PM me when you need some independent tasting reviews ha ha!

I would love to know how you are going to do this legally. Exactly what is your lawyer going to do for you? You clearly are not listening, but there is no way whatsoever that you will get the licenses and permits to do this from home. I don't mean to be harsh, but it simply is not possible. You need a Thai company with 10 million baht registered capital, a factory license, an alcohol production permit, a bonded warehouse (which requires a sizeable cash bond to be lodged), an export permit, VAT registration, paperless customs and FDA approval to manufacture. That's just off the top of my head. The biggest problem you face is the minimum production quantities. Ask your lawyer what the minimum production quantity is, then let us know. I guarantee you will not be able to produce that quantity at home. The reason you can not find a supplier is because there are no legal suppliers - because of the restrictions I outlined above there is no legal marketplace. iancnx
Good luck with that, if you are successful my bet is the big boys will come calling. I am sure of this as I once had an aspiration to produce a craft beer. Not impossible but my enquiries led my to believe any major success would be met with ummmmmm resistance....... Boycie
Making whiskey or rum must be same same but different than brewing beer in Thailand http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/938719-brewing-beer-in-thailand/ OP i think you owe blackcab a beer whiskey or rum for saving you the expense of lawyer fees and purchasing equipment that i believe would not be granted a 'permit' for your small distilling operation. I hope you prove us all wrong, please report back and let us know how it goes.
likethemthin
To BlackCab: All of your points are well taken and I printed out to keep this list. But I am up here in Loei and things are quite a bit more informal, it is really “who you know” (isn’t it everywhere??)and I feel I am well covered in that regard. Also, I would not think to start this as a farang, my Thai wife and assorted relatives will be involved not me. I note there are many many smaller distilleries in Thailand, and many are set up as partnerships. I was also following the story of this fellow who started out quite small and had none of the investment you are mentioning: Article starts in Thai but there is an English translation at the end: http://www.tcdc.or.th/articles/business-industrial/17138/#เมรัยดอกไม้-Drunken-flower-ความคิดสร้างสรรค์บรรจุขวด And I also think I can follow along what Isaan Rum did, I feel there are successful models out there: http://www.liq9.com/issan-rum-750-ml.html And again, as this product is solely for export (and Thailand seriously promotes exports) some of the things you mention may not be applicable. But anyway, I am just investigating, and first thing would be equipment and cost. If it turns out this will not work, then OK I just wasted a little time. and to: Hereinthailand: Many thanks, I had those, but trying to avoid import tax/customs duties where I have been improperly burned before, I will double check to be sure I did not miss a Thai supplier, and also, I seem to have better luck using DHL since the customs law seems to be better followed and one just pays what is appropriate. Thanks again for the ideas. Just asking those that may have been through it, maybe had some leads.
Hereinthailand
I always ship EMS to my wifes names from aliexpress and they always put gift and a low price on my items, never had any trouble. I would never ship DHL or Fed Ex or whoever as you will get charged whatever customs feels like. I dont mind paying import duty on something that is made or availible in thailand but when they force me to pay for something I cant get here I will try to work around it. likethemthin
Hi HereinThailand: I reviewed your link to mostly Chinese suppliers, but Yes, this seems to be what I had in mind. 65 liters is not a large unit, but good enough to test out the procedures. I think I read somewhere that 65 liters of mash would yield about 20 liters finished product, so you would have to be running this thing constantly or using a series of them which is somewhat appealing in that you keep possiblity of explosions to a minimum. And very good prices, most under $200 USD. So I will study these offerings carefully.
Hereinthailand
Making a distillation column out of copper is very easy to do with the right plans. Finding or having fabbed up a stainless boiler shouldnt be that hard to do either.

GL I came across the one and only Beer Bar specializing in craft brew beers in BKK a couple years ago when I was living in Samut Prakan. I think it was a few blocks South of Soi Cowboy. mick220675
If you do have a go at making a brew make sure you have get a hydrometer, my wife's family have been making some good stuff for years. But there have been a few accidents leading to very painful temporary blindness. I brought them a hydrometer from the U.K and it has been quite interesting to test the different whiskeys. As previously mentioned its all illegal, I just sample it for family safety.

Thian
In Malaysia they put a load of fruit in an earthware pot and dig it in the ground for some weeks..when they did it up there's a local brew in the pot. I've seen small stainless watertanks along the road for sale, maybe 200 liter or so. And the spiral can just be made of a copper pipe. Just google for moonshiners on discovery channel...they show you how to build it all.
