The new list of requirements at Samui office says you have to provide a copy of rental contract - we own our house so of course we don't have a rental contract. Does anyone know what other document the immigration office will accept?  (The house blue book only has the company name not our personal names.)

thanks for your reply - does the linear map have to be drawn in front of the officer at immigration or do you do it in advance and bring it?

You can do it before you go to immigration.

I wonder what purpose a rental agreement serves. Are they doing market research ? Does someone aspire to become a landlord on retirement? If you are living in the country what business is it of Immigration how you provide for your accommodation?

It is for proof of residence and nothing more. It is the only viable proof there is for most people.

The immigration office wants proof of residence primarily to prove you are living within their area of responsibility.

What I find most disappointing is that Immigration Officers can't take a person's word as the truth, is there anything to be gained by lying about that?

Being able to go to another office after having problems with an office or one that is friendlier.

That could be a factor, imagine a an officer wanting a quiet life being so unfriendly that they have no applicants. I don't think that the Immigration division fears that happening.

Immigration started wanting proof of residence in 2009 when they made the rule that you had to apply at the the designated office for where you are living. Prior to that many people were going to Bangkok to do their extensions which was causing it to be overloaded with applicants.

That's interesting I thought that I was making a joke!
The irony of it, people proving that they are entitled to use an office which they would rather not use. You would think that the only office wanting proof would be Bangkok.

That is compatible with Jomtien's policy for extensions.  When I did my most recent extension in December they said they'd be satisfied with any bill (TOT, mobile phone, cable TV, etc) with my address.  They accepted my condo blue book even though my name appeared no place in the document.  (Ditto for the TM.30 I had filed a few weeks earlier when I moved to Jomtien.)

I recall several years ago reading that Immigrations wanted the address verified so they knew the correct and full address.  The Thai address format can be baffling to some foreigners and Immigrations couldn't count on the applicant to provide the full, correct address on the application form.

Which proof of adress can I provide for retirement extension if I live in hotel without any contract and change many time of place ?

You would need some kind of proof you have a long stay arrangement with the hotel when you first apply for the extension. After you have the extension you could move around but would still have to your 90 day reports to the office where you applied for the extension.

Sorry, I find that a somewhat naive point of view.  You might be a nice honest sort of person, in your own eyes, but look around you and read the news and you will see there are lots of bad guys out there, including on Samui, on top of which if something happens to someone and they have an ID Card, or Passport details, on them, the Police can trace where he/she lives through Immigration Records, in case there are other interested parties.

I use my 5 year driver's license for my retirement extensions.  When my wife died I went in and asked the IO and she said the the DL was fine!  Different offices, different rules always blamed on the "new boss"!

My Retirement extension is in May but info in this thread raises some issues for me. We moved within Phuket in December. My wife (Thai citizen) signed the lease. I carried out change of address with her as Housemaster. No problem. But now this might need more documentation in May. Any help appreciated.

Immigration will accept the lease agreement in you wife's name if that is what your are worried about.

Never a truer word spoken however as ever on TVF we have our doubters one of whom flamed me for daring to suggest my actual experience ( which was fantastic) at my local immigration was a work of pure fantasy..

such sad sad times we live in.....

Yes I was hasty , they believe me so I can't see why not others. I suppose that Immigration know the suspicious types you speak of and the proof they require of them is probably quite justified.

You can apply for the extension during the last 30 days of the 90 day entry from the visa. You could apply on the last day of the 90 days if you wanted to.

You will need proof of residence to apply for the extension.

After you get the extension you can move around but must do 90 day reports to the office where you obtained the extension unless you formally change your address to a new office.

I am pretty sure that technically you would need to register the new location with immigration each time you move.  Not very practical though.
