Five monks and two taxi drivers were arrested after being accused of using and selling drugs out of a pagoda in Svay Rieng province’s Svay Teap district. Captain Neang Savuth, deputy commander of the Svay Teap district police, said police had conducted a raid on Wat Sovann Raingsey pagoda in Thnal Keng village, Phopet commune on Thursday evening.

Police seized 11 packages of crystal methamphetamine weighing 13.56 grams along with drug paraphernalia, nine phones, a knife and a motorbike. The monks – Yin Thorn, 26, Run Reaksmey, 23, Mom Ravy, 22, So Ratanak, 20, Seng Dy, 20 – had been defrocked and expelled from the pagoda on Friday after their arrest.

Police also arrested Mok Saman, a 29-year-old motorbike driver and Khean Khunny, a 40-year-old tuk tuk driver. The Svay Rieng provincial court prosecutor charged the seven men with drug trafficking and drug use. They have all been sent to the provincial prison as they await their court date.
