THE “THAILAND 4.0” modernisation programme will increase the competitiveness of Thai industries among Asean countries, according to Kornchanok Chaowarat, a third-year student of the faculty of engineering at King Mongkut’s University of Technology (KMUT) North Bangkok.

Kornchanok was one of more than 200 students from five Thai universities who recently took part in a training programme organised by Delta Electronics (Thailand)’s Automation Academy, designed to familiarise third- and fourth-year students with the latest technology used in factories.

Besides KMUT North Bangkok, students from Chulongkorn University, Kasetsart University, KMUT Ladkrabang and KMUT Thonburi also participated in the training programme.

The bottlenecks in Thai manufacturing are around poor management and a daunting bureaucracy interfering with structure of business: laws against foreign ownership, corruption, etc etc. Management often requires multiple signatures to enact what should be very simple actions. Won't accept electronic signatures, piles of worthless paper, and general attitude that everyone in the company is there to steal (may be right, rising to expectations). And always problem of nepotism, lack of skill or knowledge related to job qualifications....

I would say the bottleneck is "face".

Someone with the correct last name will be in charge and nobody is allowed to make suggestions or point out it can be done better.

This is the way the boss wants it to be done, this is the way it will be done.

Automation? What for? The boss has done it this way for years, so thats the way we continue.

Is the automated way better and cheaper? You are fired for making me lose face!

Just try to run business,s in a lean cost effective manner would achieve really good results without Automation

Stripping away all the " dead wood " from the top down along with a modernisation programs that utilize the power of computers and software which dispenses with staff, that watch over staff, that watch over staff.

Ok, there will be thousands without work, but primarily they are the " bottleneck " due to their laziness and attitude.
