MUKDAHAN, 20 February 2017 (NNT) – The Mukdahan customs office have destroyed 4 tons of cattle meat that were illegally smuggled into Thailand to prevent a potential disease outbreak.

Mukdahan Customs Office Director Thawan Rodjitt has led officials to bury 4 tons of frozen cattle meat at the Mukdahan Animal Quarantine Office to destroy the meat which could cause diseases to spread.

Antiseptic solutions and lime were also put into the hole to prevent germs from spreading.

The meat, worth approximately 400,000 baht, were smuggled into Thailand illegally from a neighbouring country, and was in Mukdahan on 17 February 2017, en route to be sold in Thailand.

Owners of the truck used for the smuggling are now ordered to be investigated, while the smuggling of illegal meat into Thailand is a common practice in the northeastern provinces, where illegal meat are sold at 80-90 baht, as opposed to local meat sold at 220-240 baht.

First time I have seen an English language paper refer to beef as cattle meat. It's accurate of course, but not the normal term. I wonder if they print their news on tree fibers?

That "cattle meat" could be anything, beef semantics aside.

Most likely Asian buffalo re-branded to a name suggesting "beef". Nothing wrong with the right cuts of buffalo either.

In the 1990's in Vietnam, buffalo was their 'beef'. Totally edible but typically tougher and bland. I have had my share. However, at some point everything with four legs was butchered and usually ended up on a plate. I have stories...

Ah huh...that explains a lot.

Thats the thing. @ 90 baht retail 'beef' as it were, is below cost. I doubt that beast in those bags was bread for a plate.

Nothing surprises in Vietnam. I was in a Big C near Hanoi recently to see camel meat in the butchers section. I probably have the same stories..... tit cho and tit meo.
