Police chief repeats call for Dhammachayo to surrender in order to end conflict

The national police chief on Monday repeated his call for Phra Dhammachayo to turn himself in to the police in order to put an end to the confrontation between the authorities and followers of the former abbot of Wat Dhammakaya.

Pol Gen Chakthip Chaichinda blamed some monks for attempts to provoke violence and their questionable conduct such as covering up their faces with masks while insisting that both the police and officials of the Department of Special Investigation have exercised extreme restraint and refrained from resorting to violence to deal with the provocative monks and lay supporters of Dhammachayo.

Maintaining that all the officials are not armed, the national police chief said he would like the Thai society as a whole to question whether it was the officials or the Dhammakaya followers who were actually provocative.

The police do the same when they have checkpoints down the road here in BKK...and not even show a namebadge when they yell in your face...plus they wear sunglasses as well.

Perhaps the junta should adopt the former Abbott's strategy by doing things quietly.  Time is on the former Abbott's side.  The junta looks more foolish with every day.

PM instructs officials to urgently deal with Dharmmakaya temple using legal measures

BANGKOK, 21 February 2017 (NNT) – The government spokesman has instructed the authorities to urgently use legal measures with the Dharmmakaya temple to avoid clashes.

Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) spokesman said that Prime Minister Gen. Prayuth Chan-o-cha has closely monitored the Dharmmakaya temple's case. Officials from the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) officials and police officers have been dispatched to handle the matter, while military officers are on standby outside the temple premises to assist people wishing to leave the temple and to facilitate traffic.

The main principle is to proceed within legal procedures so that it will not become an example of a cults that disregards the nation's law and order. Authorities have been extremely careful in their operations, as this is a sensitive matter, said the PMO spokesman.

He has asked the public not to worry about the issue as the Prime Minister had instructed DSI officials and police officers to be flexible in their operations, and to strictly avoid clashes.

I was under the impression that the main problem was just that, they are disregarding law and order!!

And in response, Dhammachayo repeats call for police to surrender to end conflict.

Until then, Catch Me If You Can.

I guess the national police chief is in the top ten list of the Abbot to receive a well wishing postcard with blessings for Songkran from a foreign country.

What amazes me about this situation is that, by and large, the RTP is basically incapable of exercising any effective crowd control measures.  On the other hand, they are confronting monks which make the situation very sensitive for the junta.  So, foist of the job to the RTP so the junta has plausible deniability (with the exception on the use of Article 44) if the situation looks any worse than it already does.

I don't know how to explain this to my family in europe. For them all budhists are the same honest peaceloving people so they don't understand what's going on at all at this temple.

When i tell them the same monks also have temples all over europe/usa they can't believe it.

If hasn't turned himself in by now he will never will. Probably in some other country now. Man someone needs to wake up to the reality.

How many times has Dhammachayo been "asked" to give himself in? If he is innocent he would have given himself up a long time ago so he would have the opportunity to prove his innocence?

The RTP/Army/DSI need to enforce the law! Otherwise S44 and the law becomes a joke. Stop pussyfooting around and do what you are paid and expected to do! And those who physically oppose you, lock them up also.

All least they don't wear yellow shirts and take over airports, disturbing thousands of customers, while the cops and military don't do anything but stand around with their thumbs up their asses.  But that was different because they belonged to the same Bangkok MAFIA.

When have you seen Cpl Prayut and those boneheads enforcing the laws, they are probably to freakin dumb to know what the laws are and most of the time they make it as they go along.  I am not a monk favorite but I hope that they stand up to those idiots.

When your national security forces can't find their stomach to arrest a bunch of thieves dressed in yellow robes holed up in a temple of worship, how can we expect them to defend the borders! No wonder the abbot of the Tiger Temple simply absconded, and other corrupt monks from this country roam freely around the world enjoying life!

Reading the large placard at the front of the picture (U can't charge...) certainly smacks of twisted reasoning! But, I guess it is hard for recipients of "windfalls" to accept those gains may be illegally acquired. Or then again, he may be a budding politician? :whistling:
