Simple question here: someone on retirement extension (mean got a non O for over 50 then got a 1 year extension) get a work opportunity in Thailand. What is the process for the work permit? Apply the WP based on the original Non O visa and current extension or need to get the visa converted to Non B ( in immigration) or need to go get a new visa (Non B) to an Embassy / consulate in a neigboring country and then apply for WP?

I have had 4 different WPs, from 3 different provinces on a retirement extension. So in my experience you can get them. When I applied for my first, I applied for a marriage extension, because I know you can work in that. However I had the financials and the officer gave me a retirement extension. I explained I wanted to get a WP for teaching. The officer said no problem. The officer was right, there was no problem. However I have heard of people having a problem. By the way on the stamp for the retirement extension, there is no place it states work is prohibited.

You cannot change non immigrant visa classes at immigration. Only a tourist visa entry can be changed.

Most work permit offices will not accept an application for a work permit with a extension based upon retirement.

You might have to go out for a visa exempt or tourist visa to apply for the work permit and get a work permit application approval letter to apply for a non-b visa at a nearby embassy or consulate.

Thanks all for your fast feedback. So based on your replies, it doesn't seems to be regular situation and process is not clear and definitely confirmed.
Anyway, when I post it was to know in case. But seems, the situation has been confirm as the concern person just got a job confirmation. So she will find out directly now and I might report back later how it has gone.
Thanks for your feedback again

It is possible to get a WP with an extension based on retirement, but it would be down to the labour office processing the application. Note that even if the WP is issued immigration would almost certainly not renew future extensions based on retirement if they knew you were working.

Thanks. Actually, my sister used to work in Thailand with WP and necessary related extensions for many years. Then lost her job last year, so WP and extension. As she turned 50 that time, she then went to the route of Non O and retirement extension to stay in Thailand.
But now she get an opportunity to work again. That's how my question came. Now whatever she can process WP application down to labor office or have to go through new visa ( as mentioned by Ubonjoe earlier), she will forget about the retirement extension renewal as long as she is working.

As I have said before in cases like this, go ask immigration, they are not the enemy.

Of course. The question in this forum is to get an opinion from the experts and persons having such experience. The final decision remain to the concern authorities.

Very true, and I do realize that some live a long drive from immigration too.  I know a guy that told me he was taking a friend to Laos for a visa run, I said to him " you are on an extension and you better stop and get a reentry permit".  He said he didn't need one, I said " you are driving right past immigrations front door when you leave this bar, just stop and ask".  He lost his retirement extension on reentry and was mad as hell at immigration.

I must also say all immigrations are not equal, ours in Sakon Nakhon is fabulous. I could see how they could get a sore ass from dealing with guys like that though.

Actually in this case it is not only immigration he needs info from. He is also asking about a work permit that is issued by the Labor Ministry's department of employment.

Very true and Immigration would probably tell him that. Your info is brilliant joe but sometimes I think people think that the authorities here are out to get them or something.

Update for information:
Confirmed that she will need to go to a nearby embassy or consulate with necessary documents to apply for a non-b visa in order to get a work permit.
In her case she will come to the Thai Embassy in Yangon as soon as she has all the documents required as I am based in Yangon will be easier for me arrange her trip. Also, that's where she got her Non-O for retirement extension application last year.
