18 facts you didn’t know about Thailand

Featured Replies

I've just read some stuff about Thailand and found this website. Is there really a law that you may not leave your house without knickers?

Are there any foreigners who can say the full name for Bangkok? I didn't know how long the coastline is but knew all the others, except the underwear law. Is it just made up by the author?

    How trustworthy is "Rough Guide?"

My gf just sang me the name of Bangkok in a song that they learn at school around 6 or 7 years old.

It is a LONG name....

Great, I've memorized the whole song after listening to it once.

Well, not sure about the real meaning of it.

The city of angels? Or the city of fallen angels from Nana and Soi Cowboy?

Yes there is.

But there is no law about leaving someone else's house without them.

Loosely translated.....Was more involved when my wife read & explained it to me phrase by phrase....

I also suspect that it has hidden meanings in it. If you look hard, it has many districts named in it. Indian Sanskrit and Sri Lankan, Kampuchean, Laos, Southern Vietnamese (Cham) have many double meanings, far beyond this poor soul to interpret but some have tried to educate me.

ive been illegal for 10 years then!

Is it actually illegal to step on Thai currency? Certainly bad form and I suppose possible LM.

It is illegal to drive with no shirt, got caught by that one.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

Yes! We can't step or draw on the Thai currency as the Thailand king photo is in the currency note, it is illegal in Thailand. In Asia, drivers must wear shirt while they driving and also all passengers. But in some holiday breaches, the police just close one eye.

Is it illegal to play footfall in Thailand, Like it is in England, still.

I know that this was 2014 but only 16 million tourists flying in each year? England is a constituational monachy, should that be Great Britain?

I recall in the 1990s reading about an incident where a Swiss tourist stepped on a coin he dropped to stop it from rolling away, and the people around him then proceeded to kick his ass.  Every coin has a picture of you-know-who, therefore by stepping on the coin, well.....

That one about the underwear is reminiscent of something from the Woody Allen movie "Bananas."
