UBON RATCHATHANI, 27 February 2017 (NNT) - Minister of Transport Arkhom Termpittayapaisith on Sunday presided over the opening ceremony of the Si Khew - Nang Rong highway. It is regarded as the main road to the lower northeastern region and ASEAN.

This highway number 24 connects Nang Rong district in Buriram with Prasat district in Surin. The bike ride "Highway Bike On Route 24" was held at the opening ceremony to promote the route.

The highway is expected to connect tourist sites and promote international trade in ASEAN.

The minister said this highway will reach the neighboring countries and there are many more roads which will be opened to link Thailand with ASEAN.

New?  I've driven along Route 24 for around 25 years now, and it's been 4 lanes to Nang Rong for quite a few years already.  They recently extended the 4 lanes further east from Nang Rong (and then re-did the outer lanes due to the usual shoddy workmanship), which is the only new part of the road, and isn't mentioned in the OP.  I look forward to attending the opening ceremony for that in 2030.

The usual suspects will now be waiting to read about the first fatality on this new Highway 24 and post accordingly.

What a happy chappy you are.

Most of this has been open for a while but needs regular maintenance due to the traffic. 4 lanes is so much better than the old run, despite the odd bump. Nang Rong to Buriram to be finished in a couple of years then all the way from Nang Rong to Det Udon too. Once finished it will make travelling so much easier. Looking forward to it.

  • I wondered what those cyclists were doing. I crossed the road to get to Big C in PKC and was surprised to see cyclist hammering along the road at 11:00 in the morning. It was getting hot. The police at the lights by the police station did not look happy at having to manually control traffic.
