Trump aide 'inadvertently' plugged Ivanka products - White House

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House told a government watchdog agency that Kellyanne Conway, a senior aide to President Donald Trump, acted "inadvertently" when she publicly endorsed the clothing and jewellery line of Trump's daughter, Ivanka, according to a letter the administration released on Wednesday.

Conway came under criticism last month when she said on television that Americans should "go buy Ivanka's stuff," in comments that appeared to violate government ethics rules prohibiting the use of public office to endorse products or advance personal business gains.

In a letter to a government ethics watchdog agency, White House Deputy Counsel Stefan Passantino said he met with Conway after her comments and that she committed to follow the rules in the future.

The Office of Government Ethics has said the White House should consider taking disciplinary action against Conway.

But there was no mention in Passantino's letter of any disciplinary action.

"We concluded that Ms. Conway acted inadvertently and is highly unlikely to do so again," Passantino said in the letter to Office of Government Ethics Director Walter Shaub.

"It is noted that Ms. Conway made the statement in question in a light, off-hand manner while attempting to stand up for a person she believed had been unfairly treated and did so without nefarious motive or intent to benefit personally," the letter said.

Conway spoke about Ivanka Trump's products after department store chain Nordstrom Inc <JWN.N> said it was dropping the brand of the president's older daughter.

A day before her appearance on television, Trump complained on Twitter that Nordstrom had treated his daughter unfairly by dropping her line.

Representative Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on the House of Representatives' oversight panel, criticized the White House response, saying other federal employees would likely be suspended if they made similar comments endorsing products or services.

Norman Eisen, a former ethics adviser to President Barack Obama, said each federal agency decides for itself how to handle such violations. He said he would have preferred a tougher response from Trump's White House, but he said Passantino's handling of the situation appeared reasonable.

The Dufuses in the Oval office only admit doing something wrong when there's irrefutable video evidence and there's no possible way to slink their way out of it.   Similar to Trump's 'pussy grabbing' tape.  If it wasn't on tape, and was just an assertion by one or more witnesses, Trump would be shouting for weeks about the liars, and would be slapping one or more lawsuits.  Yet, because it was clearly Trump talking, he couldn't deny it.

Whereas the 13 or so allegations by as many women, of him assaulting them sexually, were dismissed angrily by Trump because THERE WAS NO VIDEO OR CLEAR AUDIO to back it up. It goes without saying that Trump's idiotic fans slurp up every bit of liquid manure he dishes out.  Many still believe Obama is a Kenyan Muslim.

Nah,   her boss doesn't know the law, there is no reason to believe that she would.

I tend to believe she didn't realize just how this would be perceived.

I wish this was the biggest problem that the administration had.

There are so many things to go after in the trump regime that the resistance needs to focus on the more important things. Such as the Putin connection, top adviser a bizarre white nationalist extremist, the failure to release tax returns, financial corruption due to lack of separation from his business empire, and violations of the emoluments clause. That Ivanka plug by Conway just doesn't make the cut.

I don't 100% agree with that.  There's a air of impunity with this administration.  Feeling they can get away with anything.  Bar reporters, report fake news, break laws, etc.  Remember what they got Al Capone on.  A relatively small thing.  But it was still a violation of the law.

The administration is held to a high standard.  And for good reasons.

Assuming for a moment that this witch really didn't know that what she was doing was a violation of ethics rules (which is a HUGE stretch), that's even worse. What that indicates is that at no point has she been briefed on ethics rules pertaining to her job. However, as I think about it, maybe that's not such a huge stretch after all, given that ethics of any kind and this so-called administration are total strangers.

AG Sessions just got caught in a whopper of a lie.   He said, during confirmation hearings that there were no contacts between the Trump campaign and Russians.  None.  Zero.  Sessions was integral to the Trump campaign.  FBI just came out saying Sessions himself had two conversations with Russian officials during the campaign.  Brace yourselves, Trump fan, Sessions is going to go down like a flaming Zero riddled with Corsair bullets.  He'll be one of the next, but by no means the last of the Trumpsters to crash and burn.   The White House won't be a place of decency until Trump and every one of his partners-in-crime are booted out.

I'd like to be the Sargent-At-Arms who gets to walk into the Oval Office and physically escort the president out through the halls and into a yellow cab waiting at the curb.

I don't think Sessions was officially part of the Trump campaign.

Wow, is all I have to say to the Trump bashing.  The lady was standing in support of Trump's daughter, who was dissed by a department chain.  Don't forget that the government is still new, and getting used to their jobs. Were you perfect at the starts of your new jobs, No!

I know that Trump is not popular, but he is the President of the United States, the haters are still not over the Democrats loss.  The Hillary lovers will be miffed until the next election.   Trump was elected to represent America, and not to be loved by the world, I think he is a proud American, who has had enough of other parts of the world, including cheap labour Mexico, taking jobs away from America.  I hope his policies, get more Americans back to work.

As for the Trump, and his government bashers, don't you all have better things to do like work yourselves.?

Geezer

This could be a big deal:

http://www.cnbc.com/2017/03/01/us-attorney-general-sessions-did-not-disclose-russia-contact-wash-post.html

Quote

Justice Dept: Sessions spoke with Russian ambassador in 2016

Attorney General Jeff Sessions had two conversations with the Russian ambassador to the United States during the presidential campaign season last year, contact that immediately fueled calls for him to recuse himself from a Justice Department investigation into Russian interference in the election.

Sessions, an early supporter of President Donald Trump and a policy adviser to the Republican candidate, did not disclose those communications at his confirmation hearing in January when asked what he would do if "anyone affiliated" with the campaign had been in contact with the Russian government.

Sessions answered that he had not had communication with the Russians.

Pelosi calls on Sessions to quit after Post discloses Russia contacts

Though this is a pretty good explanation:

Quote

Justice officials said Sessions met Kislyak on Sept. 8 in his capacity as a member of the armed services panel rather than in his role as a Trump campaign surrogate, the Post reported.

"He was asked during the hearing about communications between Russia and the Trump campaign - not about meetings he took as a senator and a member of the Armed Services Committee," Flores told the Post.

Crazy times.

It's not Trump bashing.  It's saying we're concerned about a senior administration official who broke the law.  She's been around long enough to know what she said was wrong.  Many here would be saying the same thing no matter who the president was.

Sorry, but no excuses.  And enough with the Hillary comments.  That's ancient history and just a deflection to the real issue.

It's illegal, period.   It just so happens it's one of the least illegal of hundreds of things Trump and his hench-people have been doing for the past 2 years.

How does that synch with Trump shouting to his goon-fans "Lock Her Up!" night after night aimed at HRC for alleged offenses which paled in comparison to what treasonous Trump did?

Sessions was the first Senator to publicly ally with the Trump campaign.  He was on stage at many of the rallies.  He advised Trump for many months, possibly every day.  If that's not part of the campaign, I don't know what is.

Sessions stepping down from his role as AG will be yet another body blow to Trump and Bannon.  They deserve every hit they get.

There's an 's' missing off the start of one of the words in your last sentence. I think you can figure which one..

She is not new to the scene but more cunning than most she will slip in whatever and wherever she can and plead stupidity when caught. Alternate truth or lies take your pick. I watched her on the Bill Maher show and observed the new Republican battle plan the same with the Greek gay lad Milo Y who lost his job over his statements. The new approach is to get a ear to ear smile and just keep talking ignoring who your talking to face the camera and keep talking over top of them and do not let them get a word in edgewise. Its called getting out the Republican message. I call it the old grammaphone approach wind yourself up and let er go. Utter crap.
