Regardless of the legality or not of the issuance of the passport do the NLA really not have better things to be doing than spending their time on matters like this, which quite frankly on the grand scale of things are fairly minor and meaningless to the general public?

Amazing the NACC has finalized a case and surprise surprise it's one against the Shinawatras. Now where are all those other cases? Police station construction etc

The Ombudsman previously tried several times over many months to get a response from this gentleman and Yingluck as to the illegal issuing, and hand delivering of new passports to the criminal fugitive who happens to be their respective cousin and brother as well as political party owner. Opening the Foreign Ministry specially when offices were closed due to the worst flood in living memory just to do this could also be considered a somewhat trivial waste of time given the seriousness of the floods and poor management at the time.

But hey, as always, you never think the Shins should be held accountable, have the law applied to them, or be punished in anyway for whatever they choose to do.

Probably. Here resignation, even removal, doesn't stop examination of your actions while in office.

It's not the same at home, but does that make it wrong?

No it doesn't make it wrong. Too many in the West get away with all sorts by quietly resigning or being removed.

If the strategy is to get all viable PTP leadership banned from the next election, ie., so that pro-royalist Abhisit can win against weak opposition, NLA's time spent on impeachment would be well spent from Prayut's viewpoint. This has been the pattern following coups in Thailand - all in the name of reform and justice.

Or maybe it's just to punish a politician who put his criminal cousin and party boss before the country by acting illegally, wasting tax payer's money and doing it at a time the country was in crisis due to severe flooding.

Maybe they should check if he bought the air ticket when he hand delivered the passports as a birthday gift.

No, i think the Governments should serve the people, just you think they should have no choice in who serves them, whereas i prefer they do.

Are you really trying to pretend that the Shins ever served anyone but themselves?

As well as advocating that they shouldn't be punished for their illegal acts because you want to try and minimize it ?

Your loyalty is outstanding. Hoping people want to believe the fairy tale "all Shins are innocent of everything" and are willing to forgive them everything - good luck with that.

Other parties dont keep having their elected Government overthrown by alliances of military and political rivals. I think it is fair to say all of these political parties (army included) have armed persons and those willing to cause violence within their ranks if deemed necessary.

Other parties aren't completely controlled and run for the benefit of a convicted criminal fugitive who not only jumped bail to avoid a prison sentence but also is avoiding 15 plus serious other charges whilst trying to figure a way out to get himself amnesty.

The factions that support the Shins have shown to be the one most ready to use threats, intimidation, violence, assaults, bombings and worse to get their own way and keep and maintain control. I don't remember others threatening judges, bombing courts, shooting rival speakers, and murdering children and bystanders so much.

Rob, every critical point you make about the PTP could be turned on every other Government in Thai history as well as the current one.

But, but, but - the others all did it, do it and might do it in the future - hardly excuses what this guy did, which is the topic of this thread.

So money is the decider,  just forget about the abuse of the democratic system? I see nothing wrong with disliking someone who abused his position to benefit the career criminal that put him there, for exactly that purpose.

I cannot think of a greater abuse of the democratic system than the one where a few people with guns abolish it and declare themselves rulers. No bigger abuse than the NLA which is the defacto fully appointed rubber stamp parliament of present day Thailand. None of the purpetrators will ever be impeached over any of it.

The carreer criminal didn't put him there by the way, he was put there because PT gained 265 out of 500 seats in parliament due to the Thai electorate.

Surapong impeachment case due to start on Thursday
By The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) is scheduled to start impeachment hearings against foreign minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul tomorrow and expects to close the case on March 30, said Jet Siratharanon, the spokesperson for the NLA’s whip.

Surapong and the National Anti Corruption Commission (NACC) will be given a chance to defend their acts before the NLA votes, Jet said.

The NACC voted unanimously a few weeks ago to seek criminal action against Surapong and also his impeachment over his decision to reissue passports to former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra in 2011.

So obviously you accept that the rich or powerful can operate under a different set of rules to the rest of the population. If your inferred logic is applied, all those "other cases" will be selectively chosen.

Have you noticed that whenever a politician, policeman, or official is pursued for any offense, it is always a former? Never, ever a current. Will we ever see a current minister, official, army officer, police officer, or politician of any sort pursued, arrested, convicted, and jailed? Ever? In our lifetimes?

Not sure if there has ever been a less sincere, less effective, or less competent man in power in this country, than Little P.

Moving Thailand backwards at an alarming, breath taking, and astonishing pace.

No we won't because there is no real democracy here otherwise it would happen. The ones in power misuse their power and are protected until their rivals get to power and use the law (because the law is breached misused and trampled on) to go after their enemies. I hate the selective enforcement but its as close as we get here to having them face the music. The longer a certain party is in power the longer their crimes will be hidden en go unpunished.
