BANGKOK: -- Thai Airways International and Airbus Industries on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding for a feasibility study to be conducted about the development of an aircraft maintenance, repairs and overhaul facility at U-Tapao airport.

Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak who chaired the MoU signing ceremony at THAI head office hailed the MoU signing as a “dream comes true” for Thailand, saying that Thailand has earned the trust of foreign investors that it could become the regional centre for aircraft maintenance, repairs and overhaul.

Noting that 40 percent of Airbus aircraft sale came from countries in the region, he said that Air Bus’s choice of Thailand for the development of MRO is quite meaningful for Thailand.

The deputy prime minister said that, after the MoU signing, both THAI and Airbus must speed up the feasibility study so it could be completed within this year and, then, the work would move to the next step of public private partnership (PPP) process.

Have airbus bosses lost the plot?

Mou with Thai for the possibility of maintenance carried out here.

Nobody here does any maintenance, it is an alien concept to Thais,

No quite, they have been keeping Thai and other airlines serviced well

for many years now and without major dramas so far, at least you have

got to give them that, the fact that they aren't the most energetic, clever

or resourceful people, that's another topic....

With all that additional traffic at U-Tapao, landing fees etc etc , then this certainly will benefit the RTN who control the airport, such that maybe they could afford to maintain the submarines that they are in the process of buying.

Or more golf courses and smarter staff cars, there are so many calls on funds...

One of the most corrupt countries in the world becomes the regional center for aircraft maintenance, repairs and overhaul?

Terrifying. I may never fly again.

It's a memorandum of understanding to conduct a feasibility study...
There are a lot more dreams yet before anything comes near to becoming true.
Whilst I agree that they seem to manage to keep their aircraft serviced, there are many things, political, technical and to do with attracting and keeping investment which may yet stop this project getting off the ground.

What a lovely idea. Wondering if the labour department will open an office within the huge (and I mean H-U-G-E) premises of Utapao for those thousands of alien workers to be expected?
It will also revive tourism minister Kobkarn's idea of turning Pattaya into a sports hub; out with the sleazy trade and in with the sports. Pattaya features cheap subsidized international schools, affordable for any alien worker, and there is - according to another official source, plenty of nature rather than nightlife in and around Pattaya.

Get real - Thailand is simply not ready in all aspects for such projects. Operating such a maintenance centre, 100 miles southeast of Bangkok .......... get the other basics right first and then the next generations can see as we shall not witness this happening in our lifetime
