AIS Fibre HG180v2 Router: LAN ports issuing different subnet IP addresses??

OK, this one has got me REALLY baffled.  I have an AIS Fibre HG180v2 modem router with 4 devices connected by ethernet.  Just had a hell of a game trying to fathom why one of those devices cannot see a media server which is on the same network, but that all the other connected devices can see.  Literally spent HOURS looking at why this was occurring.  Tried powering off the router, the devices, different cables - EVERYTHING.

Then, with the device not working properly, I take a look at it's IP address.  It's a 100.##.###.# (in line with the CGNAT IP addresses) number whereas all the devices that are working properly have been assigned 192.###.#.### addresses!!  Is this normal behaviour for these routers.  I've never EVER come across it before.

What I can't find anywhere is any setting that will change the router behaviour, along the lines of 'hey schmuck, kindly issue 192 IP addresses to devices connecting to all 4 of the LAN ports, not just ports 1-3.

Any ideas?

Mine worked fine with all the devices issued IP address with 192.168.1.1xx.

I'd suggest you do a hard reset.

I'm curious if you get gigabit (1000Mbps) speed with ethernet or just 100Mbps?

Yeah might do that. I'll get back to you once I've done it as previously I've only had an Apple TV wired to it. I haven't even checked the router spec yet to see if it's GB Ethernet.

Got this sorted in the end.  AIS Call Centre passed it to the Fibre team who did some tinkering their end and now all the ports issue 192 IP addresses.  Either that or they were able to access the router remotely to change something, can't see any Admin accounts though, other than mine, and I changed the password on that.

A Router from an ISP generally comes with customized firmware, allowing them complete backdoor access via Telnet, TR069, or some other non web interface.

As Chicog wrote in another thread

"Most of these ISP modem routers are old, cheap and mostly insecure (and insecurable).

[...] frankly a load of rubbish."

Otherwise, glad to hear you got the issue sorted.

Yeah for sure.  It's another reason why I'm thinking of shelling out and adding a daisy chain (much as I HATE the idea of another box) router with hopefully better performance (but I'm not building my hopes up on that one, or falling for the advertising / (paid) review hype!!).

I did spoke to AIS regarding using our own modem/router because I was not happy with HG180 and was told its possible.

They gave me user/pass for my account but I never got my own modem because I hook up my Cisco router for gigabit and AC wifi connections.

That might be better then, maybe I'll go for one of TP Link DIR 895L.  The HG is OK but dead basic.  Do you have the AIS router set to bridge mode by AIS?

I'd suggest you to give AIS a call and ask if they allow you to use your own modem instead of their modem router.

If can, you can ditch their modem and connect straight to phone line (mine is condo VDSL type).

If you have direct fiber line, I think you'll need to user their modem and you may connect your wifi router as an extra access point.

Yeah I'm in the same position, condo so it's a VDSL box / connection to the fibre junction downstairs. As such I'm fairly certain I can connect a new modem / router direct.  I've already tried to check with AIS once but sadly the guy who called me back, supposedly from the fibre team, knew less about internet technicalities than I know about nuclear physics.  Next time I contact I'll try and talk to somebody who at least knows what they are talking about.

You may not be aware there is a higher level adminstrative account on the HG180 . User name: awnfibre Password: fibre@dm!n

Id like to know if you made progress on it as i'm in a similar situation. Ive just added an Asus router which without doing anything on the HG180 has significantly improve response times on delivering individual pages (max download speeds though are exactly the same) .  All i did was turn the wifi off on the HG180 and plug the ASUS  router in a HG180  ethernet port.

I want to configure the HG180 to just use it as a VDSL modem but am still trying to work out if there is any specific speed  or other adantage to this before start fighting battles with AIS on transferring  passwords etc over to the router.  I just sat on the phone for 20 mins waiting for someone at AIS to pick up.

I get that using bridging should be more efficient than routing but  as the data will still be passing through the same physical port electronics and software and i dont have anything else plugged into the HG180  im not sure it actually will be.  Id like to know other peoples experience with actually doing this.

One part of my brain is saying if it works dont break  it, the other part wants to play.

I emailed AIS call centre. Just asked them to switch my AIS Modem to bridge mode. They called me be, checked I had all I needed then told me the user name and password for PPPoE log in which, IIRC, was my fibre account number in both cases. They said they'd call me back to tell me it had been done. Likely after a couple of days. I noticed the internet went down after one day so I plugged in the new router and set it up. All works fine. No hassle at all to get it changed to bridge mode. And my wi-fi is now much better. LAN cable speeds are same though, both were at 50.
