Yes indeed - With the provisio that this is not a clever twist to unvoi pay anything at all - future gentlemans promises may tend not to materialize over time especially when the vacation is over, the distance increase and the relation With the gf has come to an end ...

I assume a 74 year old would be old enough to handle a Direct tip of 10%...10.000thb cash in the hand now may be far better than a unsecure possible future monthly payment - after all, he is not only a South African, he is as well a "cop"...;)

You have a very interesting point but....

The old guy has obviously been content to live the way he does for decades.

A big injection of cash could ruin his life?

There was a study of UK lottery winners conducted a few years after the lottery started in the UK.

The biggest win then was one million.

Of the ten or so winners, there was not one who survived without being ruined.

They had family problems and or got killed in a fast car crash and or got into drugs and alcohol and or gambling and or wasted the winnings and ended up divorced and or out of work and in debt and or.....

There are perhaps some similarities to be seen when a poor Thai lady has a relationship with a "rich" Westerner.

As the new riches come to her (and her families) way, greed may set in......

She/they, want more and more....

The Westerner gets ripped off and the relationship ends badly.....

Bearing in mind your excellent points, perhaps finding out where/how the old man lives and seeing if anything needs to be fixed.

Plus a new set of clothes and a good meal might be enough to repay his honesty without any possibility of changing his lifestyle.

I see Your point, but we are talking about 5-10.000baht in cash Equal to some  months of Income. I doubt this kind of Money would have turned his life up side Down in a bad way...;)

He has done his part of the job and should be rewarded the same time doing so. I do not think the South African would have appreicated to "maybe" get his Money back in installments over the years to come...;)

Why are you fixated on "Giving a financial reward"?

Not everyone wants to be rewarded.

Simply giving joy to the South African might be enough reward.

Even 5-10K baht could give him problems. To us westerners it's a very small amount, but to him?

Does he have a bank account?

Where could he keep the money safe?

Who would he want to share it with?

Could he become the object of envy or jealousy?

He might end up mugged or worse etc etc.

Then again, he may give it to the Monks to make merit.....

IMHO, much better to do something nice for the old man. Just ask him, why would that be hard?

Then there can be no problems.....

Nice story. Only problem is how this policeman can carry around B 100 k which is approximately R 40 k. That is 2 months or more salary for a normal policeman in South Africa.  My G search of the policemans name also only came up with the TV story nothing else. Maybe I am just too sceptical these days.

He must be a traffic cop

Has something been missed in translation? Its not about whether it should be a Financial reward or not as this is already stated - its all about how to hand it over (or how to unvoi it - promise about future installments may be a such way)...

To disempower the honest old man its not the way to reward him...
