How good is a teachers or a nurses Govt Health care?

I was told that If you marry a  teacher or Nurse even if she is retired you can get put on her health care coverage?

With all the talk of how hard it is to get insurance over 60 I thought this topic deserves some more research. But how good would the health care coverage be for a farang husband?

In a separate topic,  I'm under the impression that a nurse gets about 20,000 baht/month retirement. I guess a woman like this has some benefits over a bargirl?

I am married to a former Nurse and yes, you have full medical cover at any Govermment hospital. I have used the service occasionally and it's fine, although if I had any life threatening conditions I would opt o return to Europe if possible.

I guess this is more a benefit for us Americans as we don't have lifetime health care to return to.

It just seems like it is something to consider when dating a Thai woman with possibility of retirement in Thailand.

Gosh- first question- what is your job? You are a nurse- fabulous - marry me ( and then I can get health insurance)

Of course you can get health insurance over 60- but you have to pay!

I'm married to an ex-school teacher and am on her insurance. One has to be registered at the various hospitals one might want to use first, but this is pretty easy. One also has to wait in lines a lot just like any other public heath service around the world. It is best to go in the afternoon when it is quieter. I also have private insurance, but haven't had to use it yet.

I am registered at 3 hospitals - one in the local town for minor ailments, a university hospital in a large town for routine prescriptions etc., and a big hospital in a major city if I need to see a specialist.

One big advantage is free dentistry care which is available at all hospitals. The local one charges for cosmetic works like crowns, but only 1,500 Baht. I had a root canal treatment at the university hospital, at no cost, and the quality of work seemed fine.

Of course, all your prescriptions are free as well. I have glaucoma which required a $160 (after Medicare) visit to the eye doctor in Australia, plus $80 for prescription drops each month. Over here in Thailand I pay nothing for the eye doctor consultation and nothing for the prescriptions.

I'm an American and I have medical, prescription, dental and vision related expense insurance coverage for life as part of my pension. I submit receipts every few months and the dollar equivalent is deposited in my bank account in Chicago.

In the US, Women you may meet usually ask "what do you do?" or "where do you work?" in the  first 3 questions.

Its not that I hang around looking for teachers and nurses... they just seem to know English so If you use dating sites and look for women who have average or above average English maybe college degrees , they trend towards these professions.

Yes nurses and teachers  have to work for 25 years and maybe be 50... that was funny..They may not be 50 yet but in 10 years when I am 65 maybe it would be a nice benefit.

Insurers like BUPA have an age cut off for initiating local insurance. Can't recall if it's 55 or 60, but to continue coverage beyond the cut-off age you would need to have started coverage when you were younger and never allowed a lapse from then on. Even then, as you say, they don't publish annual premiums, which means they can make it too expensive for you to carry on with them.

You are fortunate to be a bit older than I and worked for your company long enough... these days are over!  at 56 I pay 630$ US / month now...  and not much chance that will be going lower...  the odds are it will increase 10-20% a year.

Hey if your GF isn't a nurse or teacher dont think I am dissing you.  It seems to be sensitive for a man to be a golddigger.  I hear that there are millions of Thai women.. I read don't pick a bargirl  blah blah blah.  I hear about true love.. Love at first sight!  Let nature find her for you.

Its not something I look for but surely a woman who may have a pension and some healthcare even if just for herself is a plus compared to someone with debt.

I have read where health insurance in Thailand costs about 5,000USD a year and if you use it once you get cancelled.   I am just asking how this govt health care is quality wise.  It could save a man quite a bit of money and give him a feeling of safety for the next 35 years.   I have heard about long
Que lines...

As they say;

Do not marry for money… Marry for love.

But remember that it is just as easy to fall in love with a rich girl, as with a poor girl.

I am 63 :

Sure but did you think that girls ( non bar girl) are with us at the beginning for love they first look first at the financial security we can offer and after love come as the relation(ship) last.

So if you marry a nurse or gov teacher it's a win win relationship. If I have to do it again it will be the profile I will be looking for.

But a gov nurse or teacher  can have big debt too .

The quality of care seems fine, but there are long lines at some hospitals.

This morning I went for a blood check (mainly cholesterol, sugar and PSA). I arrived at 7:30 am and went through the usual reception business. I gave the blood at about 8:00 am and went to the cafeteria to eat. At 9:00 am I was called to talk to the doctor about my results.

I also wanted to renew one of my prescriptions, but the right doctor didn't turn up until 9:00 am. The nurse directed me to the specialist at 9;15 am and then I went to get the prescription filled at the hospital pharmacy which took only a few minutes. There was no charge for anything.

I did go to the same hospital for 2 nights for a minor procedure last year. They put me a 6-person ward, but said I could stay in a 'luxury' room if I paid 600 Baht a night. That is what I did, the room was private, modern, spacious and very comfortable.

I must admit that this a relatively new university public hospital and is not yet crowded with patients.

If you are on your wife's government employer  insurance, the hospital charges the government directly for all the treatment costs which is then reimbursed by the government directly back to the hospital. So it is to the hospital's advantage to give you good care because they get full cost recovery. This is compared to the universal '30 Baht' care system which comes out of the hospital's centrally allocated budget, and which often runs short.

ITs not a bad idea to look for Nurses and teachers..

#1  there should be just as many lovely women in these professions as any.

#2 Many have above average English ability.  Either writing or also speaking.

#3 Income of 40,000 + baht a month

#4 The ability of adding you on their Govt health  plan.

#5  A pension of approximately 20,000 baht/mo

#6  I think both Teachers and Nurses have demonstrated the ability and or desire that shows they can take care of a farang

#7 Many have been the sole provider and raised children.

#8  Both these occupations required lots of study and dedication when they were young.

#9 There may be some above average qualities of families whose children went into these occupations.

#10 both of these occupations mean that this person will most likely have some quality friends from work.

I hear teacher salaries are rising 4% this year.
