BANGKOK: -- The government is promoting the employment of disabled people this year by enlisting the assistance of governmental and private agencies and preparing suitable working environments for the handicapped community, authorities have said.

Government Spokesman Lt-General Sansern Keawkhamnerd said on Sunday that Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha had instructed relevant agencies to improve the quality of life for handicapped members of society, particularly by providing employment opportunities.

The premier wished to see disabled people being given an equal chance to be employed without discrimination, Sansern said.

He added that this year, the administration hoped to help 10,000 disabled people enter the labour market.

Sansern said that out of the 800,000 working-age handicapped persons nationwide, only about 200,000 people had jobs. He added that the government's commitment to the policy would include encouraging governmental and private companies to join the cause as well as enforcing related legislation to ensure tangible results.

Members of the disabled community can dial the 1694 hotline of the Department of Employment for advice and assistance on employment.
