Briton found unconscious near railway track in Chumphon

BBC news quote that a fellow backpacker saw him go for a smoke between 2 carriages, as it is illegal to smoke on Thai trains. Perhaps rather than crying foul play the idiot just fell for yet another dumb act. Hope he gets better and learns some common sense.

while the updated info of this moron hanging out of the window earlier in a train trip opens this up  it still does not explain why he only had a driving licence on him or why someone didnt alert the people on board he had fallen. How many here go away for a trip and take nothing but a drivers licence with them when in a foreign country or leave all their money, id  and baggage somewhere else while they go off to play funny buggers. While this may not be deliberate, with the information provided it leaves doubt as to what may really have happened.

more than likely had money and passport with his gear, zipped up in a bag

Maybe this time it was an accident, but an accident waiting to happen with the state of some of these trains that should have gone to the scrap yard 20 years ago. where are these new chinese trains or are we all still dreaming that one day a train will arrive

It was an accident by all accounts, but, I suspect fool play, judging by the published "selfie".

Yes, some of the rolling stock may be decades old, but every day, hundreds of thousands of people are transported on the SRT and to fall off a moving train ,IMHO, is the act of someone who is drunk, drugged or simply a fool with little regard for their own safety. The new Chinese HS  trains are the stuff of dreams.

Meanwhile enjoy the leisurely pace of Thai railways, or fly or take a bus..

Taking selfie is a new kind of illness. Admiring yourself all day long couldn't find better things to do.

It's a gene that seek to destroy itself. A certain percentage will be wipe off the face of this earth. I am not referring to the guy who fell off the train. But if he was taking selfie then it would be a illness.

- Idiots taking selfies are not.

The Thai authorities are faster than their trains.......Congratulation !!!

All trains have warning signs from today on.

unfortunately I know this hospital too well.. Everyone I have know to go there for operations or serious medical problems usually end up in worse shape with infections. Although the staff are pleasant (for the most part) they are handicapped with poor facilities and unsanitary conditions. If anyone is related to this man I would suggest immediately moving him to a private hospital there in Chumphon instead... Or to bangkok government hospital where they will have specialists on hand

Thanks for your clarification. The poor guy will be in a huge room together with patients who've got all sorts of diseases and he could catch a serious lung infection, plus plenty other diseases.

A friend of mine had a heart attack, but he finally died of a non-treatable lung infection, he got from the ICU. It wasn't at this particular hospital, but they're all the same. ( The government hospitals.)

I've seen a "Live operation, done on a monk at midnight by an Indian doctor. A real bloody one, surrounded by very sick patients.

Two to three empty beds every day that were filled up very quickly.

If relatives of him read this, please get him out of this hospital. I have been warned by a Thai doctor when my friend was sick. And he was right, he didn't make it. Died of something he didn't have before.

The doctor told me that I would take a huge risk by visiting him every day.

Thai hospitals have to take all patients from Chumphon province, but that also includes people from Myanmar, Laos, and other countries.

They do not have the facilities nor the money to separate the very infectious ones from the others.

I think you need to wake up if you are going to blame thailand for every bad thing happening to foreigners here.

Another stupid tourist in Thailand.

But let's hope he'll make it and can get on a flight back to mom .

Btw , what about his friends that took the train with him ?  Why did they not warn someone when he disappeared from the train ?

According to the BBC report, a friend and travelling companion of Mr. Clarke confirmed that he had in fact gone to the vestibule at the end of the carriage for a smoke. It was also reported that police do not suspect foul play as his belongings were found to be intact. (Probably left with his mate)

It appears that this is indeed an accident as the result of the overriding urge to 'have a gasper!'

Hope the lad has a full recovery and has learned a few lessons.

a farang with no wallet and passport, sounds more like he was more than likely robbed, you dont go anywhere in Thailand without your money and a passport/visa. Will be interesting to see what they say next and if they find any of his belongings on the train or in other peoples possesion

Please do your research first. He has a number of pictures taken hanging out of trains in the days leading up this this accident. The mail online did a article on this. 99% chance he was acting irresponsible rather that a big bad Thai conspiracy.

He was very sensible,.He left his passport and wallet  with his friends before he decided to perform acrobats out of the train window and between carriages.

Why was the train running, could be guilty.

Hopefully CCTV will capture which direction the train was running towards.

A look at the map shows its route down the coast past the island of Koh Tao. Is there some connection? I think we should be told.

According to the BBC link Clarke explained to the police he was having a cigarette and fell.

Does that mean he is already awake and not in a coma ?

The latest that I can find on the web about Daniel.

http://www.getsurrey.co.uk/news/local-news/aldershot-backpacker-fighting-life-after-12832474

He is still very poorly and being monitored in intensive care at the hospital. I'll let you read the article yourself.

The only thing I did not like and some of the comments made on here too that are negative towards Thailand. What I have seen in the news and the 2 videos I posted but got deleted is that he owes his life to the many Thais that rushed to his side and got him in hospital. If anything I would be praising Thailand for all it's help in the tragic accident.

Apparently they are arriving as we discuss this incident. See:

People in a coma usually don't speak that much, so yes, it's possible.

Chumpoon isn't well known for good hospitals, to be honest.

That exact hospital conducted emergency brain surgery on my girlfriend after a horrific motorcycle accident, unquestionably saving her life as confirmed by top  neurosurgeon at the Bumrungrad in follow-up treatment.

They also kept me alive after a separate incident involving heart failure. Also confirmed as life-saving by the Bumrungrad.

Facts vs.opinion
