Islamic State second-in-command killed in airstrike, Iraqi intelligence says

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Ayad al-Jumaili, believed to be a deputy of Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was killed in an air strike on Friday, an Iraqi intelligence spokesman said on Saturday.

The U.S.-led anti-Islamic State coalition said it was unable at the moment to confirm the information that was reported earlier in the day by Iraqi state-run TV.

Jumaili was killed with other Islamic State commanders in a strike carried out by the Iraqi air force in the region of al-Qaim, near the border with Syria, a military intelligence spokesman told Reuters.

"The air force's planes executed with accuracy a strike on the headquarters of Daesh in al-Qaim .. resulting in the killing of Daesh's second-in-command...Ayad al-Jumaili, alias Abu Yahya, the war minister," state TV said earlier, citing a statement from the directorate of military intelligence.

Iraqi forces, backed by a U.S.-led coalition, have been battling since October to retake the city of Mosul, Islamic State's last major stronghold in Iraq and the city where Baghdadi declared a caliphate nearly three years ago.

Nearly 290,000 people have fled the city to escape the fighting, according to the United Nations.

FORMER SADDAM OFFICIAL

U.S. and Iraqi officials believe Baghdadi has left operational commanders with diehard followers to fight the battle of Mosul, and is now hiding out in the desert with senior commanders.

A separate battle is in preparation in Syria to drive Islamic State from its stronghold there, the city of Raqqa.

The Iraqi state TV report is the first by an official media to announce the death of Jumaili, who was an intelligence officer under Saddam Hussein, the Iraqi president toppled in the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

Jumaili led Islamic State's top security agency in Iraq and Syria, known as Amniya, answering directly to Baghdadi, according to experts.

Although the loss of Mosul would effectively end Islamic State's territorial rule in Iraq, U.S. and Iraqi officials are preparing for the group to go underground and fight an insurgency like the one that followed the U.S.-led invasion.

The last official report about Baghdadi was from the Iraqi military on Feb. 13. Iraqi F-16s carried out a strike on a house where he was thought to be meeting other commanders, in western Iraq, near the Syrian border, they said in a statement.

More than 40 leading members of the group have been killed in coalition air strikes, according to experts. Baghdadi has not officially appointed a successor.

Allah must be busy lining up 72 doe-eyed virgins for the many martyrs who are being pulverized.  Maybe Allah is putting classified ads out in Muslim newspapers:

Needed. Right Away. If you're an Arab virgin girl, we need your services a.s.a.p.  No payment, but it's for a worthy cause.  Just send photo, no resume needed.  Must be able to work weekends and be on 24-hour call.  No cripples, or over-16, or ugly girls need apply.  Report to your nearest mosque for instructions.

Truth.  WMD are comprised of the deadly trinity;

Weapon of mass destruction is a chemical, biological or radioactive weapon capable of causing widespread death and destruction.

More than 10 years after the Gulf war, there was evidence to show that  Iraq maintained a stockpile of chemical agents, probably VX, sarin, cyclosarin, and mustard.

  •  Baghdad never supplied adequate evidence to support its claims that it destroyed all of its CW agents and munitions.  Thousands of tons of chemical precursors and tens of thousands of unfilled munitions, including Scud-variant missile warheads, were unaccounted for.
  • UNSCOM discovered a document at Iraqi Air Force headquarters in July 1998 showing that Iraq overstated by at least 6,000 the number of chemical bombs it told the UN it had used during the Iran-Iraq War—bombs that remained unaccounted for.
  • Iraq had not accounted for 15,000 artillery rockets that in the past were its preferred means for delivering nerve agents, nor had it accounted for about 550 artillery shells filled with mustard agent.
  • Iraq probably had stocked at least 100 metric tons (MT) and possibly as much as 500 MT of CW agents.

After four years of claiming that they had conducted only "small-scale, defensive" research, Iraqi officials finally admitted to inspectors in 1995 to production and weaponization of biological agents.  The Iraqis admitted this only after being faced with evidence of their procurement of a large volume of growth media and the defection of Husayn Kamil, former director of Iraq's military industries.

True no nuclear missiles were found, but yellow cake uranium  was documented to have previously been present. Iraq had attempted to purchase the equipment necessary to make the weapons.

And all this time they were using this gas, Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher were calling Sadaam a hero for fighting against Iran. Yellow cake was documented to have been previously present, HAH, HAH.  Don't forget that it was WMD with an imminent threat to the west. All lies we know.

Please stay on topic, which is about ISIS.    A stroll down memory lane may be interesting, but it's off-topic.

I remember George W stepping out of a plane wearing some military uniform (evaded conscription) and declaring the Iraq war was now ended. All that war based on false WMD propaganda served to create IS/ISIL/DAESH, makinge George W words less than prophetic. Hopefully they can finish the ground war quickly. Then we have to wait for all time as the loonie remnants blow themselves and civilians up around the world. The war against Islam loonies will never be over.

Kids need educating to leave the sick cult. Sadly where they breed a new threat is happening. Islamic schools that teach segregation and hate. TheUk has loads of them. And Catholic schools are told they are too Catholic.

The world is screwed even once IS are defeated.

Kids that join IS do not have an education, they all failed at school. So how you are going to educate those that cannot be educated is problematical. These kids, the sons and daughters of maybe honest migrants would never fit in. They have low esteem, low IQ, know they will never get a decent job, never fit in. They were teased/bullied at school and IS offers them excitement and a position in a caliphate and untold virgins if they are killed in jihad. You are not going to re educate that loony propaganda. The alternate is to encourage them to go and take thier chances. But never let the survivors back into the country. That is a win win for all. The UK rids itself of loonies and the Islamists get their huge virgin reward.

That is some very broad assumptions.   It would be interesting to factually know about the age, educational background and other data about ISIS recruits.   Specifically, those that travel from overseas.

Yes is a generalisation but it is also mostly true. I have a very good female friend in Australia. She married and then divorced a Lebonese man after many beatings. Her son, Adam invited me to meet his father in Sydney. It was an experience. Hatred is the word that springs to mind after I had met many of his fathers family and friends. Lack of coherent thought, lack of respect to women, hatred for the country that had offered them sanctuary. Western education I was told, dampens the spirit to serve Allah. The youngsters that I met were drop outs and there were dozens of them. None had a worthwhile job. Some sold drugs or worked as bouncers at pubs. Acted like thugs. Could not put a sentence together. Told me that western society would soon be replaced by an Islamic Caliphate. On the plane back to Perth, Adam told me that any thought of reuniting with his father was finished. But don't let my opinions deter you. Go ask any teacher, policeman, local judicial person, terror experts or if you can, the mothers of these new generation jihadists.

A research paper below that compares the demographic / education levels of some people recruited by ISIS in Australia to some other Western countries. Many Western 'foot soldiers' who have been identified as carrying out crimes against humanity in Syria / Iraq appear to have a common background of criminality in their home countries and radicalised in prison.

http://artsonline.monash.edu.au/radicalisation/files/2013/03/conference-2010-who-jihadist-australia-az.pdf

It's long been evident that those at more senior levels within Islamist terror groups often have a high level of education.

Personally I do not agree with some who say it's fine for Western radicalised people to travel and join the likes of ISIS. It's similar to saying it's OK to torture, kill & rape so long as not in our home countries.

I doubt that any sane person could come up with an idea such as IS. Whether they are well educated at senior levels to encourage beheading, rape and forced marriage of young teenage girls, total subjugation of all over run lands, the belief in 72 odd virgins should you die and so on is a debatable point. Hitler is of similar ilk and I doubt that anyone would say that his mediocre school boy education was the cause of Nazism. Hate was the cause in both these instances. Not high education. They knew how to manipulate low level morons with promises of a master race or a caliphate and absurd promises. Not high education, just manipulators of simple people. Scum

The extreme violence you talk to is based upon revolutionary politics and strategic in intent. Documented in Management of Savagery" and originally acted upon by Al Qaeda in Iraq.

"In his 2004 online treatise: The Management of Savagery, al-Qaeda strategist Abu Bakr Naji wrote what would eventually become the ISIL strategy. In essence, how to destroy "apostate" Muslim regimes so they fall into a state of "savagery", allowing them to be built back up under a caliphate".
