Min of Foreign Affairs affirms transparency in Lahu murder investigation

BANGKOK, 3rd April 2017 (NNT) - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been in communication with human rights groups regarding the shooting of an ethnic Lahu activist, assuring them that the investigation will proceed with autonomy, transparency, and impartiality.

According to Director-General of the ministry’s Department of Information, Busadee Santipitaks, Amnesty International called on Thailand to investigate the extrajudicial killing of Chaiyaphum Prasae, an ethnic Lahu activist, while exercising autonomy and impartiality.

Investigators have confirmed that the case will be handled according to legal procedures, and free from political interference. Currently, the Ministry of Justice has tasked the Rights and Liberties Protection Department with assisting the investigation, extending aid to the victim’s family, and liaising with Amnesty International Thailand.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also disclosed that the representatives of the Department of International Organizations and the Amnesty head office in England have met to discuss several human rights issues, but did not table the death of Chaiyaphum.

Its not the investigation that I need assurance about, it is the conclusions the investigation comes too. I feel less than assured that it will be anything other than a cover up.

An empty and irrelevant promise.

As politics are illegal now under Prayut, all that is left is influence by DSI, Police and the military. None of which will be constrained or ignored by investigators.
