webfact
Old landmines get destroyed in Surin By Watcharachai Klaipong The Nation SURIN: -- To mark the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, which falls on April 4 every year, army officers brought 3,000 mines to be destroyed in a ceremony held on Tuesday at Ban Charas in Surin’s Bua Ched district. Royal Thai Armed Forces’ Thailand Mine Action Centre officers, together with Thai Civilian Deminer Association personnel, placed mines and explosives retrieved from the Thai-Cambodia border area in one-metre-deep holes before detonating them during the ceremony. The landmine clearance activities are important to prevent landmine accidents from causing accidental deaths, particularly of villagers in the border area, and to provide safe areas at border crossings to facilitate trade. khwaibah
This on the west side of the Chong Sa Ngom crossing Si Seket. Until this problem is taken care off that crossing will not be fully active like Chong Chom.
tso310
Its a real tradegy to see that there is still so much ordinance left in the ground causing death and injury so many decades later. I see they are still clearing mines from around El Alamein some 70 years later. Hats off to the people who clear the mines.

FangFerang
I wonder why the US gov isn't involved with this kick starter program? We have the most delayed-blast blood on our hands.

jhonnie
nothing less than the highest respect for these developers , however i would like to know how they are approaching the task of locating plastic mines. The starter project gives a basic overview of the machines capabilities but there is not much science or engineering being shared. A quick google shows how hard it has been to detect plastic mines with researchers in the US now working on a ground temperature sensing technique and more exciting is the MITs' work using sound to locate and identify not only the type of mine but even its' manufacturing origin https://phys.org/news/2009-05-facility-equipment.html#nRlv https://phys.org/news/2007-01-detecting-land-mines-with-sound.html#nRlv
