The old Ayutthaya island where revellers on pickups will be banned on Sonkran holidays.

AYUTTHAYA: -- The Ayutthaya traffic police have banned pickup trucks with water tanks and water-splashing revellers from entering roads around the historical capital of Ayutthaya during the Songkran holidays.

However, revellers on foot are free to enjoy splashing water, deputy Ayutthaya police chief Colonel Sombat Chuchaiya said.

Sombat said traffic police expect many tourists to visit the temples on the island of the old city during the long Songkran holidays hence they fear that pickups with Songkran revellers would aggravate traffic woes.

The ban will apply from 9am to 5pm on April 13, 14 and 15, he said.

The areas where the ban will be in effect are: Rojana Road from the Grand Market intersection to the Sri Sanphet intersection (old city hall intersection); Highway No 309 (Ayutthaya-Ang Thong) from the Chao Pho Noi shrine intersection to the Pratuchai intersection; Highway No 3263 (Ayutthaya-Sena) from the Wat Thaka Rong intersection to the Wat Kasatta intersection; Klong Sabua Road from the Wat Phra Meru intersection to the Uthong Road intersection; Hua Ror-Phaniad Road from the Rong Kha Sat intersection to the Wat Ratpraditthan intersection.
