BANGKOK: -- Ex-premier Yingluck Shinawatra spends a staggering Bt2.65 million per month to cover personal and family expenses as well as her visits to former constituents, she told a court recently in a failed injunction request.

Of that Bt2.65 million outlay, Bt450,000 is spent during visits to her former constituents and supporters in Bangkok and other provinces, while about Bt1 million is listed as household expenses.

In addition, the former prime minister spends another Bt200,000 per month to cover her young son’s education and other expenses. She told the court her expenditure on legal expenses is about Bt200,000 per month, while her personal spending budget is about Bt800,000.

The figures were cited to back her petition for the Central Administrative Court to grant an injunction ahead of the government’s bid to seize her assets.

Yingluck is facing a civil liability lawsuit in which the government is seeking Bt35 billion in compensation to cover alleged financial damage caused by her previous government’s ricepledging scheme.

The government’s factfinding committee concluded that the unlimited ricepledging scheme had led to a Bt500 billion loss for the government. Yingluck, it contended, was partly accountable for the financial damages due to her failed supervision of the scheme.

On Monday, the court by a majority dismissed Yingluck’s request for an injunction, reasoning that the government had not proceeded to seize her assets at this stage.

A minority of two judges on the court’s panel had argued for granting the injunction on grounds that Yingluck would be damaged by the government’s civil liability action while other related lawsuits were still pending in court.

Panuphun Chairat, deputy directorgeneral of the Central Administrative Court, took the view that impartiality in this civil liability lawsuit seeking the massive compensation from the expremier was questionable given that the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) had seized power from a civilian government in 2014.

Another judge on the panel, Watchira Chobtaeng, said that the government’s attempt to seek the massive compensation from Yingluck may not be legal. In addition, the expremier would not be able to live a normal life if the government moved to seize her assets while all related lawsuits were still pending.

The two judges believed that the court should provide temporary protection to Yingluck by granting the injunction.

Ms Yingluck to appeal for a stay of execution of her assets seizure order

BANGKOK: -- Former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra plans to appeal against the Central Administrative Court’s ruling rejecting her request for a stay of execution of Finance Ministry’s order to seize her assets estimated at 35 billion baht to compensate for the huge loss from the rice pledging scheme.

The Central Administrative Court ruled that the Legal Execution Department had not yet seized Ms Yingluck’s assets and, hence, there was no legal basis to request for a stay of execution.

Ms Yingluck’s lawyer, Mr Noppadol Laothong, said, nevertheless, he would appeal against the court’s ruling on behalf of the ex-prime minister, claiming that the court had not considered the essence of the case.

Nearly 32 million baht a year. I'm sure she empathizes with the daily life struggles of her supporters in the photo.

Maybe should have clause in constitution that disqualify wealthy citizens from seeking office.  Wealthy Generals should be exempted as they seize not seek office.

It's an awful lot of money. Over a year it would go a long way towards covering the cost of a fact finding trip to Hawaii, or even a tank or two...

I wander if we will ever know the real income, holdings and expenditure of some others, for example those currently in power?

Why does she need to spend 400,00 B a month to visit her constituents? Does she forget she is not in office?  Guys give her a break on her personal expenses... botox, fillers, laser treatments don't come cheap.

Not only is she not in office, but she is also serving a ban from politics. Surely, she can't be actively doing things she banned from, can she?

Hers not to reason why.

I doubt it. Anymore than we (assuming you mean the public at large) will ever know how any of the elite hiso super rich ever acquired and grow their wealth.

And that's something not new or unique to Thailand. Surprising how many of the current crop of UK politicos and recent politicos were part of extended families whose involvement in UK politics goes back generations. And their wealth, including payment of taxes, all a big secret.

It seems once you become very very wealthy, and involved in politics, the laws you make only apply to the plebs.

The generals could have done the same and earned some brownie points. Smart PR Yingluck. Generals kicking themselves.

Im sure Prayuth and his cohorts are spending far more of the publics money trying to dream up ideas to bring her down for any reason at all.

The whole case is a farce. She was the elected PM, had the power to do what she did and it lost money and advantaged a few.

Seems to be very similar to the  way the military operates.

There is no empathy for the poor only cultivation for election day. In her case its different she loves the attention craves it. I find the figures she spends staggering but then she is rich not like us.
