BANGKOK, 13 April 2017, (NNT) -The cabinet has approved three programs aimed at developing rice production output, with a budget totaling over 25 billion baht.

Vice Minister for Commerce, Nattaporn Jatusripitak revealed that the three programs will be operational from 2017 to 2021, during which the Rice Department will distribute high-quality jasmine rice at 10 baht per kilogram to participating farmers who qualify for up to 5 Rai (or 8,000 square meters), at 15 kilogram per Rai.

The second program encourages joint management and production efforts in order to reduce costs by supporting the use of certain strands, agricultural machinery, land cultivation, and organic fertilizer.

The third program encourages organic rice production by subsidizing qualifying farmers with up to 15 Rai (or 24,000 square meters), at 9,000 baht per Rai. The funds will be distributed over the course of three years in order to monitor the quality of the organic crops.

What, what, what! Rice subsidies? That was deeming a horrible unforgivable sin by this government a mere 3 years ago. Flop flop, kettle pot black, hipocracy at its best.

I cannot quite understand this but I think it means seed rice of desired type will be sold at low cost for planting. The daqnger of this is we  get into the one supplier geneticly modified type of rice.  (not an argument about GM just about the one supplier in this case)

Will the Generals assets be seized if this does not work?

Hardly. The whopper of an amnesty they granted themselves ensures that everything they do they do with complete impunity.

Now, I seem to remember the junta/yellows criticising someone for attempting to do the same.......hmmm, who was that?

Please. Please can someone explain why Jasmine rice (hom mali) is to be distributed to farmers?

Would love to see the pendulum swing back to rice production instead of the nasty/straining sugar cane production.

Landscape here has badly changed to sugar cane monoculture.

Some of our neighbours just switched back to sugar cane.

Not enough water for rice so can't blame them I suppose.

Sad to hear sounds like a slow downward spiral. So many serious things going on in the country and its people and the people in charge are busy playing Battleships (subs) tanks and planes. I think the government just bought a roll of band aids to apply sparingly.

Big, big difference between an agricultural subsidy, what this is, and the scheme the Shins instigated whereby some, but not the poor farmers, got rich quick with all sorts of scams.

One can only hope that encouraging organic-rice, or distributing better seed, works to encourage Thai farmers to raise productivity & quality, where previous price-based schemes have largely failed.

The problems with the reputation of Thai-rice having been trashed, and ageing stocks mouldering, aren't an easy fix.

Thailand has to compete on a more-even playing-field, with more-switched-on countries, it must be all the fault of those danged foreigners yet again ! :whistling:

They can't be prosecuted for anything they do. Its their catch 22. They have written it into law.

Your right in this respect. The surrounding countries are becoming fast learners. Its hard to gauge the future of rice farming. The old die hards are dying off and the younger generation cannot see a future in it and of course the hard work involved is as the young say "a turn off"
