Cambodia’s Petanque players continued to star on the world stage, with Ouk Sreymom securing the title of World Champion after defeating her Tunisian counterpart at the recently concluded 2017 Petanque World Championships in Ghent, Belgium. Sreymom outlasted Mouna Beji of Tunisia by 13-7 in the final round of the Singles Ladies category to capture a coveted gold medal.

On her way to a famous win, Sreymom had claimed the scalp of Sweden’s Noon Geffenblad in the last 16 before dumping out Spain’s Rosario Ines Lizón 13-10 in the quarter-final. Her toughest test came in the semi-final against Frenchwoman Audrey Bandiera, though the Cambodian held her nerve to triumph 13-12 and win a ticket to the final.

More success at the competition came courtesy of duo Nhem Bora and Sreang Sorakhim, who made do with a pair of silver medals after losing out to Tunisian opposition in the mixed doubles. The kingdom’s petanque stars are consistently in and around the podium at world competitions. In December 2016, Sok Chan Mean brought home a gold medal at the 47th World Championships in Madagascar, while veteran Ke Leng is herself a two-time World Championship winner.
