Strict anti-cheating measures in place for teacher assistant exams

By The Nation

Examinations to recruit teacher assistants are taking place this weekend at various provinces amid strict screening measures to prevent cheating.

Nakhon Ratchasima and Phang Nga saw overwhelming numbers of applicants vying for available positions, at 14,655 applicants for 374 positions and 2,966 applicants for 66 positions respectively.

In Nakhon Ratchasima, 16 exam sites were set up at schools and colleges in Muang district for the Saturday and Sunday written exams, and Monday’s interview.

The results will be announced next Friday, said Nakhon Ratchasima Primary Educational Service Area Office 1 director Paisal Wutthilanont in his capacity as acting provincial education chief.

As part of the anti-cheating measures, a metal-detecting device from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal police was temporarily installed at Suranaree Wittaya School to help screen more than 700 candidates.

The applicants were also required to not bring any bags, electronic devices or paper to the exam rooms.

Officials Saturday morning had to lend prepared T-shirts and pants for easy body searching to 10 applicants who showed up wearing other kinds of clothing, while several others failed to present an ID card and weren't allowed to take the tests.

In the South, Phang Nga prepared six exam sites which also applied strict anti-cheating measures at various schools.

Phang Nga Primary Educational Service Area Office chief Somrak Thawai said that although there a lot more applicants than any previous teacher assistant recruitment exams, the officials were confident in the anti-cheating measures.

Ouch, tough odds. Might be easier to join the police, army or get into medical school?

I've "heard" that you can pay a "commission" to secure a teaching position, and understand many take that route so there are fewer openings via the testing route.

Stopping people cheating on the actual exam is only going to work, if you are going to stop people paying the person marking the test paper for an upgraded score too.

The problem exists because colleges are allowed to take on as many students as they can accommodate to collect extortionate fees for second rate tuition culminating in a worthless diploma.  The result is a glut of applications which ultimately is dependent on how many are willing to pay principals without principles an under the table bribe.  I know because I wouldn't; both my step-daughters are are away for long weekends requiring accommodation/travel costs in different cities.

Yes, the mind certainly boggles. I wonder what avenues for corruption there are for teacher's assistants (the job seems extremely coveted)? Extorting lunch money from 5 year olds?

I am sure that all is above board and that there will be absolutely no wrongdoing whatsoever. They have also undoubtedly screened the candidates to eliminate those with anger management issues, history of violence and sexual predation. :cheesy:

Attach a note to the underside of the exam paper. That should sort it.

Does every "job" in Thailand take these precautionary measures ? Especially for Doctors and Dentists ?

My wife is taking these tests. She came home yesterday and told me about it.

All her belongings purse, phone etc are help by police. Cannot even wear ear rings or bracelets. No long sleeve tops.Must go through metal detector. Must be at test room 1/2 hour before test. Go in room 15 minutes before  test and get checked to make sure they have nothing on them. If they leave the room for any reason cannot come back.

I told the wife this is all smoke and mirrors the jobs have already been bought. This is just for show.

I'm glad they put the emphasis on ' strict ' otherwise, god only knows what

would have happened.....

Judging from this test page that came through over Line from an actual teacher, it seems they are in desperate need of assistance.
