I am trying to figure out how a Non Immigrant O multiple entry Visa based on marriage, a work permit and a 1-year extension "play together".

If I have a Non Immigrant O multiple entry and want to start working for a Thai company how will be the process?

- The Thai company provides all the paperwork required to obtain a work permit?

- I have to go to the Ministry of Labor and apply for a Work Permit?

- The Work Permit will be granted?

- I go to Chaeng Wattana and apply for a 1-year extension of stay?

Is that roughly the process?

Can I do that with a non immigrant O multiple entry?

Or do I have to leave the country again to get e.g. an Non B?

Or if I stayed on the Non O multiple entry I won't get a 1-year extension but rather have to leave the country every three months (regardless of having the work permit)?

If getting a 1-year extension are there any other prerequisites other than having a work permit?

You can get a work permit and work with a non-o visa or extension of stay based upon marriage.

If your salary is 40k baht or more you can use tax payment receipts to meet the requirements to get an extension of stay based upon marriage. Since you have a multiple entry visa you might need to get another 90 day entry to have 3 months of tax payments needed to apply for the extension.

You could also get an extension of stay based upon working for a company but if your job ends your extension ends. If you get one based upon marriage it would not end with your job.

To get an extension based upon working requires a long list of documents from your employer.  Requirements are here. extension based upon working .pdf

Could I piggyback on this post. I'm here on a non-imm o visa, 90 day, 20 left before they sling me out. My Thai wife and I married In Buriram province 10 years ago and we've lived in Melbourne since then.

So, aged 66, I'm retired now and we've come  back to her village to be be the farmer I always wanted to be.

I was under the false impression that I could extend that visa to one year with little formality.  So I have slowly brought some money over, far in excess of 400k,  The money, after several complications, arrived this week. The guy in Buriram Immigration office tells me the cash won't be in my new bank account long enough (45 days) so I've got too leave (Suvannaket??) and get a new 90 day Imm o visa.

But...am I not entitled to a one off 60 day extension during which time that money will sit in my account and therefore qualify me to stay.  I don't want to walk into that office again, despite their sympathetic attitude, and get it wrong again.

You can get the 60 day extension to visit your wife and then apply for the one year extension.

The officer probably was not aware of the 60 day extension option or forgot to mention it.

Ubonjoe, thankyou for clarifying the situation. I think there was a breakdown in communication, language barrier etc. It would be a foolish thing to demand your rights as farang in this country, polite suggestion with confidence would be the best way. You have given me that confidence. My thanks to you.

Thanks ubonjoe. That clarifies a lot.

Three months of tax statements to show the monthly 40.000 THB seems to be an easy way then.

On the other hand I guess most people with a work permit and an extension of stay are not married to a Thai citizen.

So getting all the required paperwork from your employer should be doable.

@vi2004, depends on how much you want to deal with local immigration. You may opt to continue with non-o multiple and doing border runs appx every 90 days. Then get new non-o multiple and repeat.

Or do the extension of stay for 1 year based on marriage to thai or based on work. Marriage-based one is completely independent of your job. So if you leave your job for any reason, your marriage-based extension of stay is unaffected :)

Within the last 30 days of any non-immigrant entry, you can apply for extension. So you have some options.

I have always kept the multi 0, worked with WP and gone out/in every 90 days.

I always felt happier with that system, did it for many years while working.

I liked the idea that if the contract finished I still had the valid Visa . If I had changed to an extension based on a B that would have gone at the end of the contract. 7 days to leave and get another visa etc.

An extension based on being married would stay valid as well because the proof of finances are the same but I just felt more in control of things with the multi 0.

I am ususally quite happy with the Non O Multiple Entry too.

But nowadays even with this kind of visa I can feel things starting to tighten up.

I had these problems myself at Poi Pet some months ago. Was told not to come back there.

Usually I make a small holiday trip by plane at the end of the three months. So Poi Pet was a last minute trip that I usually wouldn't do.

Nevertheless ... even this kind of visa now has kind of lost its "easy and safe" reputation.

So going for an extension is obviously the way the government wants it.
