BANGKOK, 24April 2017 (NNT) – Some 150,000 Thai workers employed in foreign countries at present, generated 10.25 billion baht that was sent back to Thailand, says DOE chief.

The Department of Employment Director-General, Varanon Peetiwan has revealed the number of Thai workers legally working abroad and Thai workers who have recently been granted permission to work in foreign countries is 153,264 persons, with the biggest group being employed in Taiwan at 74,240 persons, followed by Israel, South Korea, Japan, and Singapore.

Most Thai workers abroad are working in agriculture, followed by general labor, general staff, as interns, and in electrical components manufacturing.

The DOE’s statistics in October 2016 - March 2017 show 5,385 persons being approved to work in foreign countries under the government’s scheme, mostly in Israel at 359 persons, followed by South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan.

Thai workers have been sending back money to Thailand through the Bank of Thailand, with the latest figure in March 2017 showing 10.25 billion baht money transferred here, a 244 million baht increase year-on-year from the March 2016 figure of 10.05 billion.

The DOE chief added that the employment programs provided by the government do not require any fee to be paid by job seekers, except for actual costs such as air tickets, visa fee, and the membership fee for the Thai Workers in Foreign Countries Help Fund.

He added that Thai workers must keep improving their capabilities, and use the knowledge they gain abroad to help improve the country and the security of their lives.

They should tell more about that to the population . Some Thais think Only We ( Farangs) are out of our countries, If you argue with one them they will just ask you to go home. This is my country!

I have, on occasion ,transferred large amounts of money from my Thai bank account to my missus' Thai bank account (not married). Not a single question has been asked nor an eyebrow raised.

Try sending a small amount of money back to the UK and they ask for all of these documents to prove where the money came from. Why? I was told it was to prevent money laundering. Bank even told me that Thailand has a big problem with money laundering. I offered them some advice; don't allow people to transfer large amounts of cash in house without asking the relevant questions. But then again, this has nothing to do with laundering. It's purely to keep the money in the country.

Another "hub" record? This only covers the legal ones. I am surprised that they admit to this as this is usually a sign that these people consider any job opportunities dead in their home country. Ooops overlooked the obvious the baht amount kicked back.

Curious about this as ive thought if i lived near "Thaitown " in LAX then maybe

i could get the thai feel and food and whatnot without all the visa BS....but im guessing

the situation would not be the same--wishful thinking maybe--turning the tables on thais

Well that's funny because as many as 3 million foreigners from Myanmar (the vast majority), along with smaller numbers of Cambodians and Lao citizens work in Thailand. This total is many times more than the total of Thai workers working abroad according to the figures presented here. Out of these 3 million, some are undocumented, but at least 2 million are from Myanmar, with the bulk of the remainder, around 800,000 from Cambodia and around 200,000 or so from Laos. The occasional Filipino, Vietnamese, Indian and Bangladeshi also works illegally in Thailand.

I'm not aware of there being much animosity towards these people by Thais because they mostly work in menial roles. Even westerners, who work in white collar roles tend to be respected - only thing is that too often Thais stereotype westerners as English teachers even though they may actually work in HR, marketing, finance, media, even engineering services.

I think that there are also thousands of Thais that live and work abroad, who are dual citizens.

How nice for them.  Glad to hear about the 150 thousand that are also legally working abroad and

making real money in other richer countries.

Geezer

There are thousands of Thais illegally working abroad, most we never get to hear about.

We know of a Thai woman living in our area who leaves Chiang Mai and visits Colombo and Kandy in Sri Lanka to work for 1 month, then returns to Thailand for 1 month and repeats the process throughout the year.

How it works:
Providing the women are young enough and reasonably attractive, there are agencies openly operating from facebook and other social networking sites that arrange jobs for Thai women to work as escorts or as prostitutes working under the cover of spas and massage parlours. We found out about a local 32 year old woman, as gossip and news travels fast among the locals here, who travels by plane from Chiang Mai to Sri Lanka as a tourist. Not a problem because Thai citizens do not need to apply for visas if they visit Sri Lanka as tourists for a maximum of 30 days and it only costs about 7000 baht return to fly from CM to Sri Lanka. Once she arrives this woman begins working illegally as an escort or prostitute that has been arranged for her by the agency. They usually work from the 5 star hotels, spas, resorts or casinos, as pick ups in the lobbies or from the hotels spas. Some work as mobile escorts or call girls, but will only meet clients from the best hotels being hired by businessmen, high ranking government workers or high end tourists and why their rates are more expensive then usual. This is actually promoted by the hotel owners because they believe it`s good for business. It`s only the lower end back street brothels that get raided and closed down on occasions by the police. We know there are many Chiang Mai women who are participating in these schemes and if the woman is very attractive a 10 out of 10, she can earn up to 500000 baht a month as a high class escort or call girl. Sounds a lot but some of these Thai prostitutes and other very attractive female nationalities on the high end scale will charge over 8000 baht a session and only need 2 customers a day to be in the big money,  although out of this they have pay commissions to police, hotel owners and pimps. Malaysia and Hong Kong are also favourite destinations for these women. Some of these women can work in Sri Lanka, Malaysia and other countries simply as hostesses and still earn much more than could ever dream about earning in Thailand.

Australia is also tipped as a doddle to get into to for Thai sex workers. They apply for student visas then either manage to stay using marriages of convenience or other ways as they are soon the learn the tricks of the trade and milk the system in Australia.

So the figure of 150000 I guess is well under estimated, and I guess the figures for Thai sex workers plying their trade worldwide would easily surpass that.

Yes, if the UK can not-afford four new nuclear-subs, surely Thailand can not-afford more-than three diesel-powered ones !  Just think of the opportunity for shock-and-awe, never mind their utility !

The statistics quoted in the OP only refer to  "Thai workers who have recently been granted permission to work in foreign countries",  the ones the government know about, and have been given permission to go.

But there must be millions more  free-Thais, who simply upped and went, and are doing very nicely elsewhere, I certainly know of several within my own extended-family, and I'm sure they never asked permission before marrying/relocating and setting-up new businesses elsewhere !  And they all send money home, to help their less-forunate family-members, or the unwell family water-buffalo !

But governments do like to think, that they're in-control, and know what's going-on !
