One dead, two hurt in storms

One man died and two were injured as thunderstorms wreaked havoc in Kampong Thom province’s Baray district over the weekend. A 51-year-old farmer was hit by lightning in Banlang commune on Saturday afternoon.
 

“The victim Yan Phat took his cow to graze in the same rice field every day, but on that day there was a rainstorm and he was struck by lightning. He died at the scene,” a local police officer said. Two other men were injured when a house collapsed on them during the storms, which destroyed several local homes. The victims were sent to hospital.
 

According to the National Committee for Disaster Management, six people were killed and 19 people injured in natural disasters during the first three months of this year. About 500 houses were also damaged.   In 2016, natural disasters killed 21 people and injured 193, the report said.
