BANGKOK: -- Deputy commandant of the military prison in Surat Thani denied all the charges lodged against him by the police in connection with the death of a conscript held in custody in the prison.

 

Lt Thitikarn Wetchasit, deputy commandant of the 45th army circle’s prison, was on Monday escorted by Major Kittisak Karnseth, a judge-advocate officer, to report himself to Pol Col Wichob Kerdkliang, deputy commander of Surat Thani provincial police, to acknowledge the charges of malfeasance in office and assault causing death to another person.

 

The army officer was questioned for about three hours during which he denied all the charges. He was released by the police after the interrogation session as the military court rejected police request for an arrest warrant against him.

The clearest, most specific reason why people who believe in the rule of law and justice are opposed to military rule.

How about murder. which is what he truly is guilty of? Cops are trying to bring a case to keep people happy, but you cannot divert from the truth. This guy was in charge and the buck should stop with him. The military court judges who denied the arrest warrant should also be charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Interesting that the police were even allowed to conduct any sort of preliminary investigation, and to make that information public.

Well look at the rank of the so-called deputy commandant LT.

that is the rank of a very junior office, in my opinion not old enough/ experienced enough to be in such a senior position.

Maybe Daddy is a high ranking officer.

The chief would be in charge. But he would no doubt be a bridge too far.

As I have always said and believe there is no rule of law here in Thailand at least from a military point of view

 

The headline is very misleading It says  "CHARGED" he was not charged accourding to the story so I just don't get it .

This report ihighlights the logic in Mr Prawit's explanation of Thailand's good fortune in having a farsighted military clique that recognises the country's need for military control and guidance of civic matters and Thai society. Who knows what's likely to happen if ordinary Thai citizens actually had control of law and order? The rule of law could well lead to anarchy.  What security could authorities have if they had to constantly concern themselves with laws that interfered with their running of the country?
