Why does it seem impossible to get a decent mixed drink in Thailand?

Hilarious thread. People eat and drink at low end or budget establishments but complain about drinks being poorly mixed and steaks not being cooked right.

Go to decent bars rather than ones that offer the longest happy hours and you'll be happy. You may have to break into a 500 baht note though.

I had a rather pleasant evening at Vogue Lounge in the Mahanakhon Cube. Quality stuff with prices to match but from 5 to 9 pm it's 2 for 1 which made it a reasonably priced ( and slightly wobbly on the feet when we left) night out.

Oskars on Sukhumvit Soi 11 have some great bartenders - they really know their stuff. They make all the classics very well and also some pretty interesting 'fusion' cocktails

Agree. And Revolucion in Sathorn, good cocktails, and some with glowing ice cubes and fireworks (for the ladies of course, I'd never order a drink with lights in it ..... ahem).

Yeah but all those places charge upwards of 150 baht for a drink. Rather more than many of these guys are comfortable paying.

A small Singha is now 170 in Tilac Bar.

I have been reading a very thorough and interesting book by Donny Gluckstein, A People's History of the Second World War: Resistance versus Empire. Of course, the author quotes both Zinn and Terkel! The thesis is that two parallel wars were taking place. The official military war of Allies against Axis that was essentially a imperialist war from both sides. The second war was that waged by the underground people's resistance. Fascinating stuff. "The USA was equally cynical in its approach to peace. As one leading politician put it: ‘As things are now going, the peace we will make, the peace we seem to be making, will be a peace of oil, a peace of gold, a peace of shipping ... without moral purpose ... .’ Devoid of moral purpose, maybe, but Hull, Roosevelt’s Secretary of State, explained the USA would lead ‘a new system of international relationships ... primarily for reasons of pure national self-interest." I'd like to update myself on the stamps put by immigration into the passport of a Permanent Resident. Does a Permanent Resident nowadays still need to get a stamp (endorsement, non-quota immigrant visa, re-entry permit or whatever it may be labelled nowadays) in his passport before leaving Thailand so as not to forfeit his permanent residence status? If so, what does this stamp look like? What is the TM form number to apply for it? What is the fee for it? What does the arrival stamp being given upon arrival in Thailand with such an entry permit look like?
