Boycott Boots Pharmacy At Thapae Gate

I have to admit that I'm getting tired of International companies like Starbucks, 7-11 and Boots coming in and destroying Thai owned businesses that are already doing a good job. The International Pigs pay absurd amounts of rent to get into the best areas, and eventually, no small business people can afford good locations anymore; the rent goes up so high that they have to move elsewhere.

Boots Pharmacy just moved into Thapae Gate and they have nothing to offer that the stores that are there already are not providing. There is a wonderful woman with a pharmacy just inside the gate who provides much better service and at lower prices than Boots ever will and a bunch of other decent pharmacies as well.

Unfortunately, these International companies seem to be able to lose money for years until they can drive out all their competition, so in the long run consumers don't have a choice.

Starbucks at Thapae Gate is paying an amazingly high rent with almost no customers, yet there they sit, waiting for the rents in the area to get so high that no competitors can afford to be near them. Then they can raise their silly prices even higher. :o

I think Starbucks Thailand prices are fixed nationally perhaps by the US headquarters. I think they are doing very well and nobody made anybody buy a latte there. Boots prices are higher than local pharmacy prices, but then again, nobody makes anyone shop there. I know alot of people shop there because they feel the chances are greater that the meds aren't copies and perhaps the storage conditions are better. Not sure if that is true, but perception counts alot.

They are parasites and a waste of money.

Black Canyon is much cheaper for the same types of coffee and Boots is overpriced and doesn't supply anything extra other than a famous name. :o

buy at boots and you will be able to get advice from a qualified pharmacist , the medications that you buy will almost certainly be the real thing and as another poster said , will have been stored correctly.

whilst i also have reservations about certain companies here , boots is not one of them.

they bring some quality , standards and respectability to the dangerously unregulated pharmaceuticals marketing shambles that exists in this country.

She's a darling, and I fully support your crusade (of course this is purely my personal opinion and not the official stance of Thaivisa).

You have my support too, and you can throw in Siam Drug to the list. Waaaay overpriced and seem to stock mostly cosmetics.

Peera Pharmacy ร้านขายยาพีระ is the name of the really nice woman's excellent pharmacy a few shops behind Black Canyon Coffee inside Thapae Gate. The service and prices are great.

Please tell all your friends about her.

Power to the people! :o

I don't jump on the bandwagon touting commercial establishments very often, but I have been going there for 7 years. Two sisters run the place together and are professional, knowlegable and have a better inventory than the "cosmetics outlet" chains, from my experience. Very friendly, too. They will never overcharge you or sell medications nearing the expiration date. My wife calls them from time-to-time for advice regarding our childrens' medications.

It would be a shame to see them lose their prime location, but it may be inevitable.

Is this the place next to that camera shop (the one that destroys half of your pictures?) .If so i remeber going their back in April when a friend of mine had a nasty case of food posioning.I was in and out inless than 2 minutes with all the nessacary anti-biotics etc, never had to repeat myself or pretend to be taking a @@@@/being sick :D and if i remember rightly it only cost 65bht.

But im British,so I'll be doing my shopping at Boots...JK! :D

I agree with the OP,but i need mcdonalds to stay because i need somewhere to go when i get sick from thai food...and why doesn't <deleted> airport plaza have a mcdonalds??? Disgraceful! :D

I agree with your concern but "your emotions" over the American take over may not be correct. If Thailand is anything like the rest of the world it is not the yankee dollar that gets put in to a country only the yankee know how and marketing "BRAND" expertise.

I would not be surprised if you do a company search if you do not find its the "elite Thai Baht" behind a lot of the visibly "yankee" brands.

In Australia it certainly is.

Boots is British, not American.

I'm objecting to INTERNATIONAL companies with limitless pockets that come in and replace local companies that are doing a better job than they will by driving rents up so high that no one else can afford them.

There is no local equivlent of McDonalds, so they don't count this time. :o

I went into Boots and there was hardly anything in there.

I either use the pharmacy in the gate or one just outside and going into Boots see no reason to change.

I find it a bit scary though how these businesses manage to open and keep going without any visible custom. I know they pay very high rents. If I was the landlord I would hike the rent up notch by notch to see how far they can be squeezed. :o

Starbucks is a joke, personally I prefer Wawee or any of the local coffee shops.

It is mainly the tourists they get though who are familiar with the brand names.

I had a hard time last Dec getting American friends to switch. They even had a Starbucks "debit" card which they purchased in US which they could use in the ones here!

I generally agree with you on the macro issue of the Goliath pushing out the locals. Similar to the issue of Wal-mart back home.

Two personal issues that enhance my agreement. Number one is, if my wife manages to finagle me into a Boots, odds are I'm out a grand in higher end creams, shampoos etc. Number two is that there is no substiute for the supremely non-stressful visit to the local Ka-Ya shop that not only will dish you out real or generic Viagra, but will pull off a tab and sell you a one-off, very appealing to the cheaper among us, of which I am one.

how do you think the staff training and benefits and pension arrangements compare between a company like boots , and one of the local concerns........and i dont mean the pharmacy that you and others mention as being a first class local business , i mean the majority of profit maximising little outfits that hire and fire and provide little practical training to the staff.

it is my understanding ,( but i may be mistaken ,) that boots really do look after their staff well.

some of these foriegn devils do actually raise standards for staff , raise service levels for consumers and in the long run will drag those locals that fail on those terms up to a higher level , if they wish to compete.

Didn't they close the Boots on Chang Klan near the night Bazzaar? Maybe the new one in Tapae gate is where they moved it to. Other than that I think there's only two or three more in town. I go there because they carry the shampoo I like and always have condoms (the right size). I do use the other Pharmacys though for drugs, ecpecially when I don't have a prescription. But I'll support you on starbucks they can kiss my a..

i'm no fan of starbucks either , but they all do well here in spite of their ridiculous prices because there is a market for them here , as there is for boots, macd , kentucky, svensens , mr donut etc.etc.etc.

its "progress" .

"it's progress"

I don't agree. It is the Thai mentality to have everything, to be seen everywhere, that is trendy or "in fashion"

You are very unlikely to ever see a Thai (when out) with anything other than a bottle of Chivas or JW Black.

The majority wouldn't have ever supped from a bottle of Dewars, Ballantynes, Glenfiddich etc.

I would wager that if you had a bunch of plain bottles without labels and filled them with a variety of Scottish beverages they wouldn't know one from the other.

But it's gotta be Chivas or Black :o

I would like to think that I knew the difference between a goog single malt and a cheap blend like JW.
