Thailand struggles with drought nationwide, mass fish deaths

BANGKOK, 26 April 2017 (NNT) - Thailand continues to contend with the dry season, as cloud-seeding operations alleviate water shortages in the Northeast.

The Northeastern Royal Rainmaking Operation Center has been conducting cloud-seeding flights out of Buriram airport to increase precipitation in five provinces including Nakhon Ratchasima, Buriram, Surin, Sisaket, and Chaiyaphum. Its 47 flights have resulted in minor to moderate rainfall in the five provinces, nourishing natural water sources and augmenting water stores for household consumption.

Meanwhile, the 12th Royal Irrigation Office reported that agricultural activities in the Chao Phraya River Basin have exceeded expectations. However, water reserves this year have been deemed sufficient for all types of usage, and the office plans to release more water for agricultural irrigation on May 1st.

In Kalasin province, farmers continued to send their crops to the local distribution center, to be sold in department stores across the province. Their crops include Chinese cabbage, spring onion, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass, and chili peppers. The distribution center reportedly allows local farmers to earn a steady income.

Unfortunately, the hot weather has had dire consequences for aquaculture in the southern province of Songkhla. Local farmers have reported mass fish deaths, resulting in losses of 100,000 - 800,000 baht. They believe that high water temperatures followed by sudden rainfall were to blame. Farmers are encouraged to file for government assistance through the provincial offices of Fisheries, Livestock Development, or Agriculture and Cooperatives.

Wouldn't be anything to do with Songkran, of course!  They must be running-out of back-up excuses.

I seem to remember a lot of rain in the rainy season.  How come they haven't figured out how to contain it?

Nice, send some rainy clouds to Pattaya.

Did the mighty General acting ad P.M say there was enough water everywhere for the dry season and not to worry.

They know how but again it cost money.

Most of his speeches have a 24 hour date after which they expire.

Songkran comes to mind.

How many millions of gallons went to waste during the celebrations!

Didn't so called specialists announce that there was plenty of water.

Yet again, more misinformation by so called qualified individuals.

Drought? Not in Udon. So far has rained a fair bit in March and April. Fish pond not even close to drying up, like some years. And cooler too.

Over here in rural Khampaeng Phet by the Mae Wong national park my rain fed fish pond which holds about 500,000 litres only got to about 75% by November and by the end of January was bone dry.

Though we have had some rain this year it is still empty and dry.

I remember last year many days without a shower looks like the same this year then but not for me as I can have as many jacuzzi baths or showers a day as I like

Water Retention and distribution must be hard words to translate or understand

Because the Thai have no knowledge about water and electricity....mai pen lai.

Because the Thai mentality is, why think about tomorrow if we are only today.

The truth is that the drought is local  in  a  few  areas in Thailand,  that  do not have adequate dams

and reservoirs to collect and keep the rain  that  has fallen.

A lot of the  country  has  been restocked  with  the  recent  rains.  The far south had

historical floods this year.

Geezer

Year in, year out there are two seasons, the flood season and the drought season, get used to it!

yeah.  Thailand gets plenty of rain, just not always at the right time or place .  Some proper reservoir and aqueduct planning could fix things for now and ever.

Maybe news maybe not, the reservoirs look mostly to be in good shape and following 2015 usage: http://www.thaiwater.net/DATA/REPORT/php/rid_dam_1.php?lang=en

Click on the link then click on the reservoir name to see current and past usage.

What a wonderful and totally inaccurate statement. It is however fully in line with your regular Thai bashing.
