Prime Minister Hun Sen called for renewed effort to wipe out malaria in Cambodia by 2025 in a message to mark World Malaria Day on Tuesday. There were 23,627 cases of malaria in the country last year, a decrease of 54 percent compared with 2015, which saw 51,262 cases and 10 deaths.

Mr. Hun Sen congratulated officials on the drop, but urged the Health Ministry, local authorities and the public to do more to stamp out the disease. “The fight against malaria is going well and we are on target to meet the national strategy to eliminate malaria in Cambodia before 2025,” Mr. Hun Sen said.

“However, we must not be complacent with the results so far. Malaria is still a serious issue for Cambodia. Unless we eliminate the virus from everybody, mosquitos can spread the virus from one person to another and from one community to another. “We must all pay attention to improving health and quality of life for the dignity of our people.”
