April MPI hits this year's new high

BANGKOK, 1 May 2017 (NNT) – The Manufacturing Production Index (MPI) for April 2017 has reached the highest figure so far in 2017, while the export of the government's in-stock paddy has received good response from several markets, according to OEI.

The Office of Industrial Economics' (OIE) Deputy Director Verasak Supprasert has revealed MPI figure for April 2017 at 124.46, which is higher than the previous year at 101.83, indicated a stronger industrial sector, particularly in the steel industry thanks to orders form the government's infrastructure development projects.

Other industries that show better performance include the frozen chicken meat industry from the increase of domestic sales and exports, and the hard drive industry from the return of orders after last year's decrease.

On rice export, the Department of Foreign Trade Deputy Director-General Keerati Rushchano has revealed the progress of the in-stock rice auction for non-consumption usage that 21 bidders are qualified out of 22 applicants. This auction is expected to release 4 million tons of rice.

The export figure of Thai rice from 1 January - 26 April 2017 has shown 5.77 percent growth, with the export scene receiving great interest from foreign countries such as Iraq, Iran, and Sri Lanka who wishes to purchase Thai rice through the government-to-government scheme.

So far in 2017. How does it compare to previous years?

I found only one mention in February 2016 when it dropped 1.6%.

Thailand reports Industrial Production Index but that appears to be different from MPI.

Be interesting to see comparison to pre-coup years.
