BANGKOK, 2 May 2017 (NNT) – The Department of Highways is preparing to open a new auction for 2 motorway routes between Bang Pa-In and Nakhon Ratchasima and Bang Yai and Kanchanaburi together costing an estimated 14 billion baht.

Department of Highways Director-General Thanin Somboon said that he has prepared details of the two motorway projects for private companies to review this month. The Bang Pa-In-Nakhon Ratchasima motorway is estimated at a value of 7 billion baht as has the Bang Yai-Kanchanaburi connection. Auctions for the projects are expected to begin late this year and conclude early 2018.

The investments will be in the form of a Public Private Partnership (PPP) in which state entities will receive funding and disperse them to contracted private companies. They have already garnered considerable interest.

Rest areas along the routes will also be opened to private investment and management.

A rest area along the Bangkok-Chonburi motorway is soon to be open for auction. The 40 Rai plot on the 94th kilometer of the route is worth an estimated 1 billion baht.

This system of building motorways is a disaster for the environment, for the economy and for each driver.
It will create huge traffic jams in front of the toll booth where thousands of litres of gasoline will be burned uselessly, thousands of hours for motorists wasted.
We see it every day on the existing motorways and continue doing it. Unbelievable.

Why cant they do this in the North? Chiang Mai in particular is dying for upgraded routes out of the city, for example the "super highway" to Lamphum is highly congested all day, every day. I'd happily pay 20 baht, 50 baht whatever it is per trip for improved highways.

When Thailand joins the 21st century you'll be able to pay the toll electronically as you whiz along.

Yeah, as soon as Somchai in front of you has backed up from the M-Pass/Easypass gate, after he finally figures out he really can't pay cash there. Happens every single Friday I drive through the gate on the 7 near Chonburi.

My point is that there won't BE any gates. The regular users have an eticket in their car which is debited to their account automatically each time they go on the m/way. The occasional users either receive a bill in the mail (rego plate ⇒ postal address), with penalties for late payment etc. All these issues have already been solved in The West. Probably they'll arrive here about mid-century ...

These huge traffic jams happen on every highway in Thailand.  The police deliberately set the lights to red for an inordinately long time so as to rake in a commission from the sellers of tat at these lights.  If you've ever travelled the 331/304 you'll see the major road lights hold up hundreds of cars whilst a donkey trots across from the minor road.
