RATCHABURI: -- Ratchaburi provincial police will be given training in Muay Thai boxing so that they can fend for themselves in confrontation with violent offenders or when attempting to stop a fistfight.

The Muay Thai boxing lesson for Ratchaburi police is the brainchild of Pol Maj-Gen Arnuparb Srinuan, commander of Ratchaburi police, after several policemen were killed or injured when they tried to intervene in a scuffle or when confronted with violent offenders.

Pol Maj-Gen Arnuparb presided over the opening of the training course on Tuesday for about 50 policemen. Also present at the event was Assistant Professor Charnchai Yomdit, president of the Muay Thai International Study Association.

Anybody taking this declared ONE day lesson will never be able to do what is outlined in the proposal, "...so that they can fend for themselves in confrontation with violent offenders or when attempting to stop a fistfight."  An improvement in the English language would help the person writing this drivel.  Check out "...in confrontation..."  With a sixth degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, I know that one day is completely inadequate in any martial art to fulfill the set down objectives.

However, this is Thailand, the Land of Dreams, so who knows?

As I read it, this was the opening day of the course, not a single day class. Agree that the latter would be rather pointless.

Training in proper police procedures and investigation techniques might be more useful.

So they will learn how best to stop a fight by hugging their opponent and try to knee him in the balls while dancing around to avoid that iron rod the perpetrator has in his hand ?

so the Thai police have no training on how to subdue a suspect or defend themselves?

They also have no training on how to enforce the law of the land, I'd say par for the course
