Thailand would be wise to reform the laws to the point where foreigners can own a home and a small piece of land perhaps up to two rai, in their own name. The rules regarding home and land ownership are draconian and unnecessary. If you truly want to protect Thais against speculation, pass the kind of law that ignorant and pro corporate America didn't pass, and prevent big companies and fund managers from purchasing thousands of homes and condos as an investment. There are not enough expats in Thailand to skew the formula and allowing ownership of a house is not going to change anything but it will benefit the community. However this is just one more indication that the government has no interest in the expat community, does not really want us here, and has never had our backs even for a moment. I call it toxic xenophobia, and the current PM was one of the architects of that hatred.
